In S3 this course is optional
This course offers an introduction to the practical skills of woodworking and metalworking through a series of small projects. It will develop many of your School Leaver Profile skills but in particular: Problem Solving, Confidence, and Communication. Students will learn how to use tools and machinery safely and independently and how to read and interpret drawings.
The course will focus on developing the skills necessary to produce models to a given tolerance, normally 1-2mm. Through hands-on experience, students will gain a solid understanding of the full manufacturing process from drawing to finished product, having the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to a variety of projects which will often combined several types of material. The course will help develop your manual dexterity and will be beneficial for all students, not just those who wish to pursue practical employment
This course can lead to SQA Practical Woodworking National 4/5 and SQA Practical Metalworking National 4/5 in S4
Students will primarily work in two media: wood and metal. They will learn about the properties of the materials and the safe and correct use of hand tools used for each. Students will learn how to check and set up machinery and how to use them safely and independently. As students move through the course, the working drawings for each model will increase in complexity and students will learn how to extract the relevant information from the drawing to fabricate their projects.
You will be assessed on a continual basis across all aspects of the course. You will keep an evidence folio which will include photographs of your practical work. Students are graded on the accuracy of their measuring, marking and cutting; the accurate set up and safe use of machinery; the preparation and application of finishes and the overall quality of the final model. Students will also be expected to keep a log book of their work including tool care and maintenance and safe working procedures.
Please note: Health and safety in the practical workshops is of paramount importance. Any student who is unable to follow instructions or misbehaves in the workshop will be immediately removed to ensure the safety of others, and home will be contacted to discuss re-admittance to the workshop.
Homework is given to consolidate learning for the theoretical aspects of the course.
You will be expected to complete this on a regular basis, normally through Microsoft Teams.
