This course is optional
In NPA Accounts, you will learn how to prepare, record and analyse financial information used by businesses. The course is designed to give you practical accounting skills that are used in real workplaces.
You will study how to:
Record financial transactions in ledgers
Prepare financial accounts such as trading, profit and loss accounts and balance sheets
Produce management accounting information like budgets and costings
Handle wages, salaries and payroll
Analyse financial information to support business decisions
Use computer software and spreadsheets for accounting tasks
Develop employability and workplace skills
These skills come from the mandatory units such as Recording Transactions in the Ledger, Preparing Financial Accounting, Preparing Management Accounting, and Handling Wages and Salaries, as well as IT-based accounting units.
To do well on NPA Accounts, you should ideally have:
A basic level of numeracy (such as National 4 or 5 Maths)
An interest in business, finance or accounting
Basic IT skills (using a computer, saving files, simple spreadsheets)
The ability to work with numbers accurately and carefully
Previous study of business, accounting or administration is helpful but not essential — the course is designed to build skills from the ground up.
You will learn through a mixture of:
Classroom teaching and explanations
Practical accounting tasks
Using accounting software and spreadsheets
Working with case studies and business examples
Individual and group activities
Problem-solving and financial calculations
The course is very hands-on — you won’t just learn theory, you’ll practice real accounting tasks just like you would in an office or finance department.
There is no final exam. Instead, you are assessed throughout the course by completing:
Practical accounting tasks
Workbook and worksheet activities
Computer-based accounting tasks
Payroll calculations
Financial statements and reports
Each unit has outcomes that you must pass. Once you complete all mandatory units and enough optional units, you achieve the full NPA in Accounts.
This course prepares you for careers in:
Accounting
Business administration
Finance
Payroll
Office and clerical work
It also provides a strong route into further study such as HNC Accounting, Business, or Finance-related courses.
