Remake of the game "ANOTHER WORLD" made by Eric Chahi in 1991, we had 3 weeks to take inspiration from the original game and make a little demo out of it.
Since the original game had too much content to be remade entirely in only 3 weeks, we choosed a specific part to focus on; the prison area.
With it, we wanted to create a small TPS demo inspired by Resident Evil 4.
It was no only our main reference for the 3Cs but also a great inspiration to recreate parts of the game where you have to team up with an NPC as we really wanted to keep the interactions between the playable character and the tall guy he is escaping with in the remake.
Here is a bunch of screenshots from the original game and what we did in the remake as a comparison.
In terms of level design, since we had a source material to rely on, I started by catching key moments of the prison area of the original game.
Since our remake was supposed to be in full 3D instead of 2D, we couldn't be 100% accurate on how we represented the prison but respecting the original game was crucial to us.
We emphasized on those key moments with the artists because, for us, one of the beauties of the original game was the environment storytelling. (as the game didn't have any dialogs whatsoever)
With key parts of the level design thought out, the 3Cs of a usual TPS and an NPC you can order to follow you or not, we were able to create a playable area where we created meaningful interactions in between the key parts.
We focused on balancing the level between shooting areas against enemys and less action focused areas with small puzzles to resolve using your gun and your tall friend.
