Premieres Across History
About Premieres Across History
Premieres Across History is a student-authored repository of articles, including discussion questions and bibliographies, to be used in music history classrooms.
Inspired by Thomas Forrest Kelly's book First Nights: Five Musical Premieres, undergraduate students in Matthew Mugmon's course Introduction to Music Literature (MUS 130B) at the University of Arizona's Fred Fox School of Music explore premieres of musical works; these "premieres" include both live performances and album releases. The musical works were largely created by figures from underrepresented groups, and the students' discussions engage closely with both primary and secondary sources to describe the premieres and the music and to generate discussion questions.
You may explore these premieres by selecting from the list below (desktop or mobile), or by using the drop-down selection menu at the top right (desktop only).
Kalanit-Liat Chalstrom, Lee Lee Hunter, and Alissa Settembrino made important contributions to the compilation of this student work.
This growing project is made possible in part through funding from the Center for University Education Scholarship (CUES) at the University of Arizona.
