Term 4 Week 8

Kia Ora Whānau,

What an amazing week it has been with Run, Jump and Throw on Wednesday and Top Team today. Hopefully the children have thoroughly enjoyed these times.

The countdown is on....only one full week to go. Please ensure you have returned any library books and checked home for any readers. We will be reading next week but won't send the books home. Home reading can still be done online with Sunshine Classics.

We have notice many of the children are very hungry at the moment. I have a feeling that this is more 'tired' eating than 'hungry' eating. If your child's lunchbox is coming home empty, I would suggest putting in a couple of extra items just to keep them fuelled for the end of term.

Your child's report was put up on Hero today so make sure you login and these these out.

Children will visit their next years teacher next Thursday morning (9.30-10.30am).

Term 4 Week 7

Kia Ora Whānau,

Only two and half weeks to go. All the children are starting to get tired and are on the count down. Here at school we are staying in normal routine right up to the end of Week 9. Everyone manages better when it is just a 'normal day', Hinehau and I included!

During the week we had our cultural lunch. Thankyou everyone for sending something along for a shared lunch. It was a lovely day and your children loved sharing where they were from and why this particular food was important. I was impressed that most of the children tried something they hadn't tasted before, were respectful and had wonderful manners. It was a lovely afternoon of sharing and learning a little bit more about each other. One of the items expressed as a favourite 'international' food was the Honey Joy cakes from Australia. Next week will be the last week for cooking and we will be making Blueberry Muffins.

There are a few end of year events coming up so please keep an eye on the emails. We will try and limit how many we send out as it can become a little overwhelming at this time of year.

Please return library books and any readers from home this coming week. Reading books will still be coming home but please ensure they are returned the following day. Last day for Library book returns is Thursday next week.

Term 4 Week 6

Kia Ora Whānau,

The Term is fast disappearing on us! It is hard to believe we only have 3 1/2 weeks for school to go. It was been another crazy busy week. It was the Tough Kids event for the Year 3 and 4's. This was an amazing event for the children to take part in. I have many photos and hopefully over the weekend I will get these posted on the blog. This week we baked Caramel and White Chocolate Biscuits and the recipe may have come home for you to try at home. Thanks Anna Kingi for the recipe! These were great. Next week is Chocolate Cake! Thank you very much to the parents who responded to my 'emergency' email regarding slides and iodine for the microscope-I still haven't found my own. The children are making epsom salt crystals during action stations and then looking at these under a microscope. For most of the children this is the first time using a microscope and are enjoying this experience and discovery time....and asking lots of questions.

Some children from Teretere are involved in the sale of Norwex car cleaning cloths. These cloths clean car amazingly and only use a bucket of water. No purchasing car cleaning products and so easy that kids can use them. The children are trying to stop this type of water going down the stormwater drains. All order details, order form etc is on facebook or flick me (Deb ) an email. Great gift idea for the hard to buy for person!

Term 4 Week 4

Kia Ora Whānau,

It has been a lovely week. On Wednesday we had our visit to the art gallery and museum. At the art gallery the children looked at the work Max Gimblett and then created an abstract piece of art. At the Museum the children did a scavenger hunt and explored the different parts of the museum. A huge thank you to the parents who came and helped on the day. The children really enjoyed the sequoia 'climbing trees' and exploring the museum if you wanted a cheap family day out.

Next Thursday is teacher only day so there is no school that day. Friday is Canterbury Anniversary so no school on Friday either.

On Wednesday is the Active Fun Run here at school at 9.15am. Parents are more than welcome to come and watch. Please ensure they have adequate foot wear for this.

On 18 November the Year 3 and Year 4 children will take part in the 'Tough Kid' event. More information to come about this.

On 19 November the Year 4's can take part in the Selwyn United Football Schools Tournament at Foster Park. Whaea Hinehau will be sending out the information for this shortly.

Please send along another change of clothes in your child's bag next week as they could be getting wet and dirty from the sand pit (Action Stations).

Term 4 Week 3

Kia Ora Whānau,

It doesn't seem that long ago I was sending out last weeks notices- the weeks are flying by! We have just finished another exciting week. On Wednesday we made cheese rolls, a Southland 'delicacy'! Most of the children enjoyed these and recipes went home on Wednesday and Thursday. These are always good to keep in the freezer and feed the hungry kids (and their friends)! Next week we are making homemade ice cream which is absolutely delicious- and only 3 ingredients!

Last night some Teretere children attended the Lincoln Envirotown Film awards. We entered our bird feeder clips and came away with $60 of Hornby Hub vouchers, vege seeds and certificates for everyone involved. These will be posted on facebook shortly for you to enjoy .......and make feeders to encourage native birds to Lincoln.

The Year 3 and 4 children attended a session with John Parsons today. Hopefully many of you attended one of his parent meetings.

On Wednesday we are off to the art gallery and museum. Thank you to the parents who have offered to help. We are leaving at 9.15am so please ensure your children is at school on time on Wednesday. They need their safety vest, lunch, drink bottle, hat and a jacket. We should be back at school around 2.30pm. Please do not order sushi on this day.

Hats are compulsory in Term 4 and Term 1. Please ensure they are named and I highly recommend you make them identifiable with a badge for example. It makes it easier to locate hats and prevent them from accidentally being worn by other children.

Term 4 Week 2

The end of another week- it has certainly gone very fast. This week we made bread in action stations and the recipe has gone home for this. The children can have a go at home if they like. It is a very simple recipe as everything just gets thrown into one bowl -and it tastes delicious ! Next week is Southland Cheese Rolls! We are still short of parent help on 4 November when we go to the Art Gallery and Museum. If you are able to help please let us know as soon as possible as we have all the Health and Safety paperwork to complete.

Term 4 Week 1

Kia Ora Whānau,

Welcome to Term 4. We have had a busy start to the Term. On Monday we had mihi whakatau to welcome new children (and their whanau) and staff into our school. Astelle has joined us from Te Matauru School and Taylor who has joined us from University of Canterbury. Taylor is training to be a teacher. On Tuesday we enjoyed House of Bricks (the 'Lego Lady'). On Wednesday we had The Playhouse actors at school putting on a play about Antarctica.

Term 3 Week 9/10

Kia Ora Whānau,

This week has been Māori Language week. It has been lovely having the children come in greeting us in te reo Māori. The children have learnt many new kupu (words) this week and are eager to learn even more. Our action stations this week (and will continue next week) have been based around learning new Māori words, arts and waiata.

The children have planted 64 native trees this week. Thanks Gavin for your helping digging many of the holes for the children. The children planted, watered, provided protection and put mulch around each tree. They were awesome and enjoyed getting their hands dirty!

This week each child made a rice ball for lunch. We have suggested they give it another go over the school hoildays for lunch one day. This is something they could almost make themselves and for others.

Just a reminder that in Level 2-no parents in class or at school hui. Make sure to scan in if you are coming on sight. Reminder to keep children at home it unwell

Sexuality Education has started week for our class and if you have any questions relating to the programme, let us know.

Term 3 Week 8

Kia Ora Whānau,

Next week is Māori Language Week. As a school we have set up with wero (Challenge) where we are trying to speak as much Te Reo as possible. There will be tokens given to anyone including parents for saying Mōrena, Kia ora, etc throughout the day. Tokens will need to go into our class bucket, which will be outside the office. The class with the most tokens wins a 'prize'.

Just a reminder that in Level 2-no parents in class or at school hui. Make sure to scan in if you are coming on sight. Reminder to keep children at home it unwell

Sexuality Education starts next week for our class and if you have any questions relating to the programme, let us know.

Term 3 Week 7

Kia Ora Whānau,

I'm please Spring is back again-long may the lovely weather last.

This week we entered three film clips into the Grow Waitaha Digi Awards- these are the same clips that have been entered into the Film Competition. This week Sienna and Maia wrote a letter to Egmont Commercial in Prebbleton asking for donations for our planting day. They are very kindly donating fertiliser tabs, tree protection sleeves and weed matting for this. A huge thank you and shout out to Egmont Commercial! The mulch was also delivered on Tuesday and the slow drip water bottles are made so we are all set to go.

This coming week we will put in our submission Selwyn District Council about the community action we would like to take regarding the eels.

This week we did an addition and subtraction challenge quiz. The questions were written by one of the Maths groups and they ran the session. The kids answers each question as a group and had a 'runner' for the next question. The kids loved it so we will certainly be doing it again.

Reminder the Sexuality Education Parent Meeting is on Tuesday night at 7pm.

Term 3 Week 6

Kia Ora Whānau,

Yip -it's been another busy week in Teretere and another busy week ahead to look forward to.

This week we entered three film clips into the Lincoln Envirotown Film competition. These clips are a three part series on how to make seed and nectar feeders, and sugar water to attract native birds to your garden. These will be shared on the school facebook page so our community can get behind the children's initiative. This is one of the actions from last terms and this term inquiry learning about New Zealand native birds. The last action from this inquiry is planting the native trees. With the help of Matt Stanford from Enviroschools we are going to be planting 64 native trees (thanks 'Trees for Canterbury' for the donation) as part of a 'native wild area' which the children researched and found is one of the best ways to attract birds. These trees will be planted in the far corner at the end of Jimmy Adams Terrace in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, we are making 64 slow drip water feeders for them. We have a load of mulch arriving on Tuesday (thanks Treetech) in preparation for planting day.

Our inquiry into the protection of our native long finned eels continues and the children are very passionate about it and the role they are playing. Next week we will begin our submission to the Selwyn District Council about the community action we would like to take. Exciting times ahead!

As our trip to Turanga had to be postponed and the weather is looking gorgeous early next week. Hinehau and I were thinking we might take the children down to the river, to sit and listen and use as an inspiration for our poetry writing.

Term 3 Week 3

Kia Ora Whānau,

This week was a very busy one. We had a fabulous walk down to the Liffey 'spring head' on Friday as a start to our new inquiry. Teretere are to become kaitiaki (guardians) of the eels in a joint project between the school and Selwyn District Council. Matt from Enviroschools came out to talk to the children on Tuesday about the eels. Then on Friday Matt, Denise (from the Selwyn District Council) and our own enviro leaders led some workshops about this waterway and the creatures in it. The children are very enthusiastic about this project and have already come up with some ideas to submit to the council in order to protect this taonga (treasured) species. A huge thankyou to all the parents who were able to assist. Without parent help we are unable to do these trips.

Learning Conferences are this week. Please ensured you have booked a time to see us. There is an early finish of 2.15pm on Wednesday. Finishing time on Thursday is 3pm as normal.

We are still wrapping up our previous inquiry around attracting native birds to the school. This week we will be making a clip on how to make a nectar feeder and seed feeder. This will be shared with the community (with parental consent prior) so members of the community can make their own. We are also going to enter this film into the Envirotown Film Competition which closes at the end of the month.

This weekend I picked up 64 native trees from 'Trees for Canterbury'. These will be planted in a few weeks down the back field to create a wild native area. Can everyone please start collecting 1.25 and 2L soft drink bottles. We are going to make 64 slow drip watering bottles for the trees. Do we have any native tree experts?- I am not and would really appreciate some help with a planting plan. If anyone has any windbreak cloth they no longer need, we would be very happy recipients of this too!

Thank you for those who offered to help on Friday next week for our walk to the Liffey. We have enough parent help now. Matt Stanford is coming in Tuesday afternoon to korero(speak) and kick start our next Inquiry. This inquiry will lead to many trips to the river, so on the odd day we will take walks to the Liffey and we may ask a day or two ahead for parent support.

Term 3 Week 1

Nau Mai hoki mai- we are so happy to be back and the kids are already thriving! We hope you had a safe and happy holidays. This term is very busy and below we have dates where we will need parent help.

Welcome to our new Students in our hub-

Amara and her parents (Yeimy and Scott) who arrived back in New Zealand after many years over seas. We hope you enjoyed your first few days last week.

Russel and his parents (Tamara and Eric) who started late last term.

Notices:

Red mufti day this Friday- for Cure Kids (children's cancer charity) with a gold coin donation. This is optional, as is the red nose day facepainting at lunchtime (another gold coin required). Further info is likely in Claire's whole school email when it comes or on Facebook.

Curiosity clubs- start week 3, just FYI.

Parent helpers- are welcome whenever you are free. That includes grandparents, etc too!

Reports- Information and teacher comments go online. You should get an email from Hero to let you know, so have a look.

Books- We have the browsing boxes up and running again. So when your child does not have a Reading session, they will bring home a book.

Mandarin- We will be having these lesson every Wednesday for 20 minutes. Sharon and Fiona are the teachers from Lincoln High Schoool.

Art Gallery- we have some art displayed in the local gallery- this weekend and next.

WOW! That term just flew by too quickly. We have had so many great things happen since returning back from Lockdown. Thank you to all the parents who have helped out in class this term when needed the support.

Term 2 Hero Comments

You should see on Hero at least 3 comments from the term 1 and 2. They will be labeled as 'Capabler Learner, Curious Learner, Caring Learner' During the holidays you may get comments based on Math, Reading and Writing with next steps for your child. It is always great to share these with the kids.

Term 2 Week 10 Notices

What a very exciting week we have had.

Whaea Tahlia (Tahlia is a Biology teacher from Lincoln High School) came on Monday afternoon and did a science lesson with the children about hand washing and bacteria. She brought along petri dishes with agar. The children put down two fingers of unwashed hands. They then did either a 2 second wash, a full hand wash or hand sanitiser. For the third sample they did either a full hand wash or hands sanitiser. Tahlia took these dishes, colonised them in an incubator for us and brought them back to school for the children to look at. The children were so excited to see their hand bacteria colonising in petri dishes! Perhaps it might be a good time to revisit hand washing at home again. Although the children are still doing hand washing here, we have had to revisit how to do it correctly again. It was exciting science and has been great hearing the children talking to parent about it.

Next week some children will be making bird feeders. A group of children are wanting to attract native bird to this area and are going to make some feeders for the seed eating birds. We are after 3 small soft drink bottles (375 ml size). Not the big ones (1.25L or 2 L ones as they are too heavy once seed is in them. We are also after 3 sets of wooden chopsticks- the ones you get with takeaway sushi and pull apart to use. If you have either of these to donate, please send along on Monday.

Next Friday (26 June) is a mufti day so children do not have to wear school uniform on this day. There is also an optional donation of a canned food. Children can bring along a can of food and this will go to a food bank.

Maths- we have started multiplication and division. For many children practising skip counting forwards and backwards in 2's, 5's and 10's is good practise at home.

Term 2 Week 6 Notices

Kia Ora Whānau,

What an exciting week and busy week we've had in Teretere! They were settled and were happy to get into routine. We slowly introduced workshops and will be in full swing next week.

We are currently doing Geometry for maths- anything related to shapes, maps, reflections, symmetry, scale, time. You could try incorporate this at home by asking- what shape is this? How many sides does it have? what shapes can you see in room? Drawing 1/2 a picture and let them try draw it back (can be shapes too). Telling the time.

Term 2 - Week 6 - We are Back !

Kia ora whānau,

Welcome back everyone! Today the children were very settled and enjoyed being back with their friends. As far as learning new Level 2 routines are concerned, the children have learnt these very quickly. We will be doing activities this week based around our wellbeing- mainly emotions and here is a website where you can find helpful tips.

To share our lockdown learning with everyone, the children can bring two things they did, made or created during lockdown to school this week. We will set up a class display.

For Actions Stations we require some resources to be collected. If you could please collect.........

*bottle caps (similar to beer caps)

*Pringles chip tins

*plastic soft drink bottles

*empty tissue boxes

*Paper towel cardboard roll (Paper towel- not toilet rolls)

Anything else you think cold be turned into a musical instrument!

Thank you for having your child organised for the start of school with their individual stationary items and drinks bottles. Also thank you for ensuring you were familiar with drop off and pick up routines as this helped with a smooth transition back to school for the children.

Mōrena everyone,

Just a quick email to touch base with everyone as we officially start four weeks of isolation. The Wesley whanau have hunkered down. Leah my daughter is busy doing NCEA assessments for Year 13 and Skype classrooms. Henry is struggling with having Mum as teacher! Currently he is refusing to come back inside after play' and is shooting hoops on the drive! (All lighthearted I can assure you).

These are stressful times so remember your number one job is the parenting one in order to make this isolation time as positive time as it can be. We want the kids (and you) having good memories of this. We have supplied some resources for you around learning and will add more as time goes on. I would recommend you do it short bursts, have a short break and then return to the task. I have heard experts in child development say children have the concentration span of their age plus 4 minutes. So a 6 year old has roughly the concentration of 6 mins plus 4 minutes-10 minutes in total. Be kind on yourself too- we totally understand many of you are working from home and with other school age children in the household.

Be flexible -Today I wrote a list for Henry of things to do and he can pick what order he does them in. I think gardening will be left to last and he will be hoping it is dark before he has to do it!

If you haven't already joined, there is a 'Ararira Springs Online Whanau' Facebook page. It is a support page for our school community. Parents and staff are sharing ideas and keeping the school community connected during this closure time.

During a walk, pop down to the school hall window and take a photo 'being kind' and share it on the whanau page. I am enjoying seeing these pop up on Facebook and seeing the kids smiling faces.

Remember to share your photo's of what your up to with us via Learning@home on Linc Ed. We will be making comments and we love seeing what everyone is up to and we miss these conversations with the kids.

End of Term 1

Kia ora koutou,

Believe it or not, today is the last day of Term and what a crazy way to do it! Hope everyone is doing fine and finding fun in everyday.

As you are probably already aware, the government has brought forward the holidays to start Sat 28th March (tomorrow) until Easter Tuesday 14th April. The activities on the blog will be taking a break for the next two weeks. During this time we will be discussing further online learning in case the lockdown continues into Term 2. We will have to wait to see how this plays out.

There are plenty for activities and ideas accessible from the blog but it is up to you if you would like to do these during the holidays. We won't be putting anything new up during the holidays. We are enjoying seeing 'Learning@home' posts on Linc-Ed so keep them coming! As mentioned in yesterday's email, the Facebook group called 'Ararira Springs Online Whanau' is a great platform for ideas and resource sharing for the lockdown. It has been set up by parents who want to share ideas and stay connected. If you haven't already joined, I would recommend it. It is very simple to join- find the group on Facebook and send a request.

We will send out further communication closer to Wednesday 15th April to say hello and what learning will look like should we still be locked down.

Term 1 Week 7 Notices

Yesterday we had a visit from Katherine Pedley, the geologist from UC. The children loved this visit and enjoyed sharing their rocks from home with her. By the sounds of things Katherine will be back for another visit at some stage.

Messages for Week 8

Unfortunately the Sports Spectacular has been cancelled next week.

*Chocolate chip and toastie recipes have come home today. The toasties recipe is a cheap and easy recipe for lunch boxes. If they do make something we would love to see this on their Learning@home page on Linc Ed.

*Please return library books and readers. Our library day is Monday.

*There is Chicken pox in our learning space at the moment. Just another thing to be aware of!

*Archie our dog will visit next week. He didn't visit yesterday as I was away.

Term 1 Week 6 Notices

Term 1 Week 6

What an amazing time we had down at the Lincoln Library on Monday. The children made some amazing creations with the huge amount of Lego the library has. They also have a 'Brick Attack' session at the library on Wednesday afternoon if you would like to be part of it yourself. Thank you the parents who joined us for the walk down there and back again.

We have another exciting week ahead.....

Things to look forward to in Week 7....

Wednesday-Visiting Geologist (Katherine Pedley) from Canterbury University.

If your child has a rock they would like to bring and ask question about they can bring this on Wednesday. Katherine will be running a hands on session about rocks and answering all the wondering the children have about rock formation etc.

Thursday -Dog visit for writing experience

On Thursday we will have a brief visit from Archie the Bichon/Maltese as a writing experience for descriptive writing. Archie belongs to Whaea Deb and he is very child friendly. Please let us know if your child is weary of dogs.

Other messages

Unfortunately the unicycle we were lent is too big for the children! Do you know anyone out there who has a child's sized one we can borrow for the remainder of the term. The children are so keen to give it a go and put newly learnt growth mindset skills into action. Please let us know if you know of anyone one, otherwise I will put this out to the wider community via the community page.
The children have come home today with a brownie recipe which they can try at home. Great for reading, following a procedure via a set of instructions, accurate measuring and also doing something nice for the whanau. If your child does make it, we would love to see (and will share) the photo on Learning@home on Linc Ed.
Teretere will be attending the 'Sport Spectacular' at the Lincoln Domain on the 24 March between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. We are travelling by bus. If you are able to parent help for this event, we would really appreciate it. Fun is guaranteed! Please complete the Google form below.

Term 1 Week 5 Notices

I think we've had too much fun here in Teretere!

Our cafe was a huge a hit! Everyone got a chance to be a customer and work in the cafe by being a chef or waitress. It was amazing seeing our class so engaged and excited for learning. The compliment jar at the end was a nice gesture to share our kind thoughts.

We went to the Liffey to catch invertebrates and were lucky enough to have a biodiversity kit provided from the University of Canterbury! We also has Mike Bowie from the University of Lincoln join us and share his wealth of knowledge too! Luckily no one slipped into the river but we had soo many questions after about all the possibilities.

Today we had the Ranfurly Shield and other trophies that were on display at school. We were lucky enough to be coached and do some rugby skills at the end. Beware we may have some keen rugby players to come this season!

Lastly, thank you to the parents who chipped in and helped where they could, we all appreciate it.

Week 6 happenings:
