Term 4 Updates:
Week 7-8 Update:
Friday 25th November is 'Dress as a Book Character' day! We are looking forward to seeing some amazing costumes.
Next Friday, December 1st, is Run Jump Throw for the Year 4 students.
Year 4 students will need:
A named drink bottle
A school hat
Sunscreen already applied before school
Sensible shoes for physical activity (no sandals or crocs)
To wear their school uniform, as usual
After this event whānau are welcome to stay to have morning tea with their child/ren. Following this, please come into class to see what we have been up to. Whānau are then able to visit the Year 5-8 classes if you wish. The senior hub are running a market on this day also, it would be great if you are able to support them.

We need your help! Teretere is having a sustainable market day next Friday, December 1st, and we are looking for Donations of old toys for our White Elephant stall. The money made from this stall will go towards our Year 8 Leavers events 2023 & 2024. If you have any toys that are still in working condition and you no longer need them we would love to take them off your hands. Collector cards would also be accepted. There will be a collection box placed in the office until next Thursday (30th November) for any donations.

TOUGH KID EVENT:
On Wednesday, 6th December all the children from Years 4-8 will be attending the New Brighton Tough Kid Challenge.
It is held at South New Brighton Domain. Parents are welcome to attend but will need to find their own way there unless there is space available on the bus once we have filled them with our tamariki.

Week 5-6 Updates:
Blue Tuesday
On Tuesday the 14th of November children can wear blue and bring a gold coin donation to donate to Diabetes New Zealand. If children wish to not participate, they are to wear their uniform as usual.
General Reminders for Term 4
Term 4 is a hat term. Thank you for helping your child remember to bring their hat each day. A number of students leave these in their tote trays so that they are always at school.
Please remember to give hay fever antihistamines before school if your child needs them daily.

Week 3-4 update
Hikuwai 1 and 2 students - headphones This term we are taking part in novel studies. To support the novels we will have some follow up activities which require the use of headphones. If you have not already, please provide a named set of headphones for your child, which can be kept at school.
Cookie Time Fundraiser- Please refer to the email sent yesterday via Hero as well as the notice your child will have received. Our goal is for each family to sell at least 4 buckets of these delicious cookies; they make great Christmas gifts.

Athletics Day: Year 5-8 Students
This is happening this coming Friday, 15 September. Please check the sports website for everything you need to know.
Curiosity Clubs Term 4
We will be running curiosity clubs for 5 weeks from 11:15- 12:15. This will start the first week of term. If you have a particular skill or interest that you would like to share with our tamariki please contact your child's ako teacher or donna.frame@ararira.school.nz.
Ideas parents have run or helped within the past include sewing, coding, bowls, (parent lead and organised) orienteering or anything you think may be of interest.
Curiosity Clubs is an opportunity for tamariki to try new activities, develop new skills and follow interests. This is all part of the Key Competencies in our New Zealand Curriculum.
If you would prefer to help a teacher run a club that would also be appreciated.
Toys at School
Please help your child remember NOT to bring toys to school. This is only acceptable when we have special 'bring a toy to school' days.

Extra notices
Hikuwai 1-2: Swimming Y5 (Sam and Louise's Year 5 students only)
Just a reminder that the Year 5s will be swimming DAILY in weeks 7 and 8 ( Monday 28th August - Friday 8th September). We will be leaving school at 11 am and arriving back at school at 2 pm. Sushi and subway lunches can still be ordered but will not be available until arrival back at school. If your child has music lessons during this time, please let their music teacher know.
Class trips:
As part of our inquiry on ‘Sustainability’ we have some trips planned. On Monday 14th August, Hikuwai 2 (Sam) and 3 (Kelly) are visiting Metro Place in Bromley to take part in a programme called ‘Watch Your Waste’. Hikuwai 1 (Louise) have a similar trip planned, later in the term. The charge for this trip will come from your termly activity fee.
The details for the upcoming trips are below; please note one class is leaving before 9am and another is arriving back to school after 3pm. This is unavoidable due to the distance we need to travel and the timing of the programme.
Hikuwai 3 (Kelly) will leave school at 8:40 am and will return by 12:30 pm. If you are keen to be a parent helper on this trip, please email Kelly kelly.mcintyre@ararira.school.nz
Hikuwai 2 (Sam) will leave school at 11:30 am and will return late at approximately 3:15 pm If you are keen to be a parent helper on this trip, please email Sam on sam.hopper@ararira.school.nz
For both trips, students need to wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals). Please pack a lunch box and drink bottle as usual.
House of Bricks Lego Fun:
We have an afternoon of lego creativity planned on Tuesday, 8 August from 1:30-3pm.
Enviro Non-Uniform Day:
On Wednesday 9 August, come dressed in green or nature themed (please bring a gold coin donation towards our enchanted forest initiative)
Parent /student maths workshop: If you’re keen to see what happens at maths time in the classroom, pop along to Prebbleton School on Tursday 10 August from 5:15-6:15pm for a hands-on maths hour.
Hikuwai 1 & 2 - Swimming - Y5’s only - Thank you to those of you who already filled out the form asking for your child’s current swimming level. If you have not done so yet, please could you check the Hero Y5 swimming notice and fill out as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact louise.dennis@ararira.school.nz
Hikuwai 1 & 2 - Swimming (Whaea Sam & Whaea Louise) - Y5’s only - A Hero notice has been sent out about the swimming lessons and requesting information on your child’s current swimming level. Please fill this in over the next week so that we can start planning the groups.
Hikuwai 3 (Whaea Kelly & Whaea Megan) are still looking for donations of wood for propagation stations. We would also love lots of empty cereal/cracker/muesli bars etc. boxes (we need LOTS and LOTS!). These will be used for the propagation station prototypes which we will be starting this coming Friday.

Week 1 went off with a bang with a successful toy swap to start the week and an amazing Matariki celebration to end it!
Apps for iPads- Whaea Louise and Whaea Sam
In Hikuwai 1 and 2, we will be using Google Classroom, Google Drive and Google Docs this term to access, create and share work within our class. If your child brings their personal iPad to school, please could these apps be loaded onto their iPad. They can then sign into these using their school email address.
Hikuwai 3- Whaea Kelly and Whaea Megan
This term, Hikuwai 3 are going to be designing and creating their own propagating stations as part of our Inquiry learning. The students have started planning out their designs and are trying to make them as cheap as possible to produce. If you have anything which may be of use from the list below we would really appreciate you sending it to school with your child from Monday 24th July onwards so we can keep the costs down where possible.
Materials needed for propagation stations: You will see some examples of what the students are wanting to make in our photo slides, below.
Wood (untreated) to be used for the bases of propagation stations
Small glass jars/beakers or other alternatives (these will be for the plant cuttings to sit in, with water)
Old light bulbs (with an opening at the top wide enough for a plant cutting to go in)
Screws and nails to join the wood pieces together
Metal hooks that could be screwed into wood and string hung from
We are hoping to get the Lincoln Mens Shed to help us with the construction of the propagation stations but if there is anyone in the community who would also be available and happy to help, it would be very much appreciated (the more the merrier!). Matariki Event:
A Matariki evening is being held this Friday 21st July between 5:30-7:00 pm at school. It is a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community, participate in Matariki activities, roast marshmallows, watch the Kapa Haka group perform and have a lantern walk to end the event.
Mihi Whakatau:
On Tuesday morning there is a Mihi Whakatau to formally welcome our new families.
Training Teacher:
We welcome Whaea Georgia, a final-year training teacher, for the first 5 weeks of this term. Georgia will be working alongside Kelly in Hikuwai 3.

Celebration of learning:
To connect with the Hikuwai whānau, we would like to invite parents/caregivers to come into school on Wednesday 28th June at 9.30 am. Each ako class will run maths games in which students will attempt to beat their parents/caregivers. At 10.30 am we will invite all parents and caregivers to share kai. We hope to see you there.

Hikuwai 1 and 2 still need a lot of jars (with no labels please) to create their Matariki lanterns. If you have some, could you please send them in with your child tomorrow; we are hoping to start creating the lanterns this coming Wednesday.

Week 8 Update:
Winter Sports/Activation Spectacular Year 5 students only
The bus leaves at 8:45 am and we will be back by 12 pm.
This week our tamariki can wear their school uniforms or sports uniforms.
Reminder - Emergency Food Items
As part of our emergency response plan, we are required to store emergency food should we need to keep children on-site for any length of time.
This could take the form of individually wrapped muesli bars, tinned rice pudding, fruit pieces in jelly, long-life crackers/cheese, rice crackers, or other instant pantry items (can be eaten straight from its packet/container and does not require heating). If you are sending items that require a spoon/fork, please include the required cutlery.
Items should be long-dated (preferably to the end of the year if possible). It is not necessary to send whole boxes or ‘outers’ but a couple of items in a plastic bag that can be stored as class items.
If your child has specific food allergies, please mark the bag clearly so it is identifiable as theirs rather than being able to be shared among the class.
These items should be delivered to your child’s classroom teacher for storing in their ako space.
JARS NEEDED: Hikuwai 1 (Louise) and 2 (Sam) students
Please bring glass jars with NO labels. We will be making some lanterns for Matariki in the next few weeks. We would love to have the jars at school by the end of week 8 (16 June).

Food for Thought Programme
New World Lincoln will be running the Food for Thought programme with all Hikuwai classes this week. There will be 2 in-class visits and a visit to New World in Vernon Drive for each akomonga (class).
Supermarket visits: Hikuwai 1, 2 & 3 will be walking to and from the supermarket on Thursday 1 June at the times below:
Hikuwai 1 (Whaea Louise) We will leave school at 8.45 am and return by 11.30 am. Students will need to be at school in time for this departure. Hikuwai 1 still needs 2 more helpers; please email if you are able to come louise.dennis@ararira.school.nz

2023 Activation Spectacular (previously known as winter sports)
Year 4 students do not participate in this, they will remain at school
This programme will start on Wednesday this week and run for the next 5 weeks. There is a cost involved for the programme and transport to get the tamariki there. Please check out your school account on Kindo. The cost for Year 5/6 is $28 for all 5 weeks of activities and transport.

Last week was EPIC; thank you to all the parents who helped out with camp. Whether it was actually going to camp, convincing your child to go, helping with all the packing, providing food or filling out the paperwork, your support was greatly appreciated. The Year 4 students also had a jam-packed week, check out the slides above to see photos of what we all got up to.
Warm clothing: Jerseys (and hats and jackets, if needed) are essential this term. Please help your child remember to pack them each day and please double-check that they are NAMED.
2023 Activation Spectacular (previously known as winter sports)-
This is for Year 5-8 students. Year 4 students will remain at school.
On Wednesday 31st of May (week 6) our Activation Spectacular will begin. It is a sports programme run by Selwyn Sports at Foster Park for the last 4 weeks of term on a Wednesday. Selwyn Sports will introduce our children to a number of different sports. Please note: The rotation in week 7 (7 June) will be at the Selwyn Aquatic centre so children will need their togs. We will remind you of this closer to the time. There is a $28 cost. This covers the activities fees and the transport to and from Foster Park for all four weeks. It will be added to your school account and can be paid via Kindo. Below is a copy of the first week's rotation; as mentioned, this starts NEXT WEEK (Week 6)

Pink Shirt Day - Friday 19 May 2023
On Friday, 19 May, Aotearoa will become a sea of pink as schools, workplaces and communities join the Pink Shirt Day movement. By taking part you will be helping to stamp out bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusion. Please encourage your child/ren to participate in this important day by dressing in as much PINK as possible. There is no donation required.

End of week 2 update:
Camp: Hanmer 15-17th May 2023- Year 5 students As we near our camp dates please be aware that we will be sending home emails with important information for you and your children to help get ready. If there are any questions please feel free to email your child’s ako teacher.
What about the Year 4s? As you know, the Year 4s from Kelly and Sam's classes will be staying at school while the Year 5-6 students are at camp. Pamela (not going to camp) and Kelly will stay with them and we have a fun-filled 3 days planned. Please see the list below for what students need to bring/wear each day. Cross Country is happening this coming Thursday, 11 May, between 1:30-3 pm. This event is for Year 4-8 students. Most students are keen to participate but if your child is particularly reluctant to join in, they are welcome to opt-out and cheer their friends on from the sidelines.
Those students who are participating can wear their house colours to school for the day if they wish. Please ensure that suitable footwear as worn.
