IMPORTANT FACTS AND INFORMATION

FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS OF STEM STUDENTS

What is a STEM School?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM schools are comprehensive schools which include the humanities and arts. At the National Inventors Hall of Fame School Center for STEM Learning, your child will learn by doing - solving problems, designing solutions and testing results.

Our STEM school uses Inquiry - math instructional materials, such as National Science Foundation supported Connected Mathematics Project, inquiry-science instructional materials, including SEPUP, a National Science Foundation supported project from the Lawrence Hall of Science. Students will be accountable for achieving 21st century skills as well as meeting Ohio Standards.

The STEM school is alive and vibrant and connected to the real world. Learning is available 24/7, connecting with people across the globe and using online tools to extend and support learning. Learning is relevant as students participate in locally created problem-based learning experiences such as alternative forms of energy and clean water.

How is the National Inventors Hall of Fame School different from other schools?

The STEM school experience is much like starting a first job. The student must bring his or her own strengths and talents to the job and put them to use. Likewise, students must be prepared to improve their skills and truly apply themselves. The National Inventors Hall of Fame School is designed to let students work collectively with inventors, STEM-related businesses and organizations, and with faculty and students from the University of Akron. The school will allow students to take intellectual risks and prepare them to become inventive, creative problem-solvers.

How does the school interact with the community?

The school's downtown location provides easy access to our community's many, rich resources and extends the classroom. Students have easy access to the Summit County Library, The University of Akron facilities, the Art Museum and more.
