Why STEAM?
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education is crucial for building the essential skills students will need in the 21st century: creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. STEAM integrates multiple disciplines, allowing students to learn through real-world projects and develop a holistic understanding of complex concepts. More importantly, it teaches them how to work collaboratively, a vital skill for future success.

More importantly, enhancement of critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration skills.

The Frederick Douglass High School STEAM Program offers multiple pathways for students to explore their interests and prepare for their future:
Dual Enrollment: Earn college credits while still in high school.
JROTC: Develop leadership skills, self-discipline, and civic responsibility.

All students in the STEAM program will be required to complete a capstone project and a student portfolio by the end of their senior year, showcasing their skills and accomplishments.
How to Apply
Interested students are encouraged to apply to the Frederick Douglass High School STEAM Program. The application process is as follows:
Application Submission: Students must apply by the end of their freshman year.
Teacher Recommendation: Provide a recommendation from a current teacher.
Portfolio Submission: Submit a video or a piece of student work that demonstrates your capabilities and potential.
Interview Process: After submission, qualified applicants will be invited for an interview.
Induction Ceremony: Accepted students will participate in an induction ceremony to formally join the program.
Applications Submission Window: January 1 - February 8, 2026
Student Selection Process: February 16 - March 1, 2026
Notification of Acceptance: March 6, 2026
Parent Meeting/Tour (Virtual or In-Person): March 12
Requirements for Membership in the program:
Maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in Science & Math courses (only).
Attend fairs at the school, district, and regional levels (e.g., science, social studies, art, technology, etc.).
Complete a capstone project.
Maintain a portfolio of work and projects performed through STEAM.
Completion of community service hours.
Participate in clubs, sports, or other extracurricular activities offered to enhance your student experience.
Participate in all STEAM challenges, field trips, and enrichment activities.
