Excused Absences

PVM follows the attendance guidelines outlined in the APSB Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook:

Elementary students shall be in attendance a minimum of 167 days a school year. (State of Louisiana, Bulletin 741)
Students may be excused for whole or partial day absences for the following reasons:
- 1. Personal illness with verification by a licensed health care provider.
  2. Serious illness in the student's immediate family
  3. Death in the student's immediate family
  4. Appearance in court required by a subpoena.
Please be aware that a note written by a parent does not excuse an absence.

Makeup Work

While we follow the same attendance guidelines as primary school, there is difference in the pace at which material is covered. Students who miss multiple days, are frequently tardy, or who are often checked out early can quickly fall behind due to the rigor of middle school.

That being said, we understand that absences sometimes happen. Teachers work very hard to help students catch up on the material that they have missed. Even if an absence is excused, a student still must make up the work that they have missed or they run the risk of receiving a zero.

Part of our job as sixth-grade teachers is to instill in students a sense of responsibility. For that reason, we encourage students to email their teachers for missing work when they are absent.
