THMS is an AVID Site School. AVID is an acronym that means: Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a nationwide college and career readiness curriculum. At the middle school level, AVID focuses on fundamental skills like organization and note-taking that will help students be successful. THMS features several AVID Elective classes. In 6th Grade, students get a semester-long introduction to AVID. In 7th Grade, students can apply to be a part of the year-long AVID Elective. In 8th Grade, students continue their work in the year long AVID Elective.
AVID Elective 7
AVID 7 students have helped sell chocolates to fund field trips and other AVID initiatives. In class, they have been focused on Socratic Seminar (fish bowl discussion) as well as abbreviations for improving their Focused Note-Taking. Tutorials are continuing and going really well!
AVID Elective 8
AVID 8 students had a field trip to CNM and College and Career High School. They did an excellent job and learned a lot of information about both schools. In fact, there may even be some students from the class who apply to the high school. In class, we are working on test-taking strategies as well as college entrance exams. Tutorials are also going great!
AVID Elective 6
The intro to AVID class for 6th grade is working on their College Fair scheduled for early December. Students have selected a college, and they will take on the role of Admissions Representative for the school. They will research their school and be ready to answer questions as students visit their college display. AVID7 and AVID8 students (along with some other classes) will tour the 6th grade fair.
