Welcome to 2nd Grade
I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and to a fun and productive school year. I am looking forward to working with your child this year and helping them to achieve their full potential.
Our Classroom Theme...
Our classroom theme is “Teaming Up for Success!” Our classroom is full of fun and exciting sports items. I believe in making learning as fun as possible and having a theme helps.
I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for a student to truly achieve their full potential. Learning starts in the home and parents are the best teaching tools. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through the Remind App, e-mail, telephone calls, progress reports and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to get a hold of me is through the Remind App. If you have not signed up please do so ASAP! You can also e-mail me. My e-mail address is email@example.com You can also schedule a time to talk with me after school.
Homework in Second Grade is primarily about developing responsibility while reinforcing skills learned in class. They will be responsible for taking home the assignment(s), completing it with a parent's guidance, and returning it on Fridays. These life skills will prove to be very useful throughout your child's life! Establishing a homework routine, preferably the same time and place everyday, with some flexibility would be a great idea. Be sure that you are just helping your child do their homework and not doing it for them. A question by parents that I am often asked is: "Should I help my child correct their mistakes?” Absolutely, this is a great opportunity to re-teach and clarify the skill.
Phonics/Literacy Homework: The students will receive an orange homework folder that they will take home every Monday. Inside the homework folder will be the weeks phonics words with assignments. The words will be focused around the phonics sounds we are currently practicing. Every Friday the students will have a phonics test.
Reading: I will not send home a nightly reading log. HOWEVER, I still highly encourage you to read with your child every night. Make sure to take turns reading. It is important to hear them read as well.
Math: Homelinks or math worksheets are given after the lesson has been taught in class. Usually, they will have something everyday. However, there will be some days they do not have a homelink. Homelinks are also due on Fridays.
Challenge Homework: If you feel your child needs more homework or needs to be challenged I will also include a “Challenge Tic Tac Toe Menu” in the homework folder. These assignments are NOT mandatory.
Our Classroom Behavior System...
Establishing good classroom discipline is essential to each child’s success. If there is no discipline, it is impossible for learning to take place. As a class we went over the rules and each student signed the rules agreeing to follow them. I have established a discipline plan that involves a 3 step warning system that will visually show the children where they are at during the day.
Students have a baseball bat with their name on it, which starts on the baseball field.
Strike 1 = verbal warning
Strike 2 = “Tiger Tracks” instead of playing at recess they must walk laps on the grassy field to re-set
Strike 3 = 2 “Tiger Tracks” and a phone call home or Principal office (or depending on the action a discipline referral.)
I also have a positive reward system set up to reward the children that follow our classroom rules. Each group has a jar. If I see a student following the rules and doing what I ask, they earn a marble. At the end of the week we count each group’s jar. The group with the most marbles gets to pick a prize from the “Treasure Box”.
MVP of the
Each week I will select a student that I feel has had exceptional behavior. This will include behavior, class work, and homework. I believe in recognizing those who do follow the rules and try their best at all times. Every Friday, I will select the “MVP of the Week.” On the following Friday, they will have 10 minutes to make a presentation. The presentation will include family pictures, favorite things, something special to them, about them, and basically anything they want to share about themselves. I have set aside a special spot in the room for their pictures. They will be up all week long for everyone to see. (Yes, you will get your pictures back.) You will have the weekend to prepare and brainstorm the items you want to bring. I ask that you bring those items on Monday so I can display them all week on our board. If you have more questions about this, please don’t hesitate to ask.
