Can you believe we are already in the third week of the second semester? This year is flying by.
We are off to a great start in both Web Development and in Computer Aided Drafting.
Web Development students are learning photo editing tools. They are doing an amazing job. It takes a second to get the hang of it, but they will build their skills quickly and soon be doing editing on their own!
CAD students are getting their feet wet in SketchUp. This week we are designing vases that will be 3D Printed. They are also doing a great job. I cannot wait to see what all they design once their creativity starts shining through.
If you child is feeling frustrated, reassure them that as long as they are trying they will do fine. The important thing is that they attend class, follow along when I am giving the instructions at the beginning of class, and ask questions. I give lots of asynchronous time to do the assignments in class, so that is the best time to ask, but they can also come to office hours, or send me a message in the Questions and Concerns form that is posted every week for them to communicate with me.
To help motivate students to stay on top of their work and be present at the beginning of class when I am giving instructions, I have done two things this semester that I hope will help.
I am giving a Bell Ringer assignment the first 5 minutes of class. It is for points towards their grade, but they need to be in class on time to get the points. I gave this in in-class learning as well. I think this helps focus the students and gets them to class on time. The form stops taking submissions after 5 minutes, so it is very important to be on time.
I will only take late work up to the Monday following when the assignment was due. I will not take late work for prior weeks... I do my final grading on Monday night for the previous week. Time is given on Monday for them to check their assignments to make sure they have submitted everything for the previous week. This is something they need to do and for which they are accountable.
Obviously, there are exceptions. If they have an excused absence or if they are having tech issues.
Absences are excused if a parent or guardian calls the front office to get the student excused prior to class. Tech issues need to be reported to me ASAP... but definitely before the assignment is due, and needs to be verified by a parent.
If you need to reach me for any reason, please contact me at email@example.com. When writing to me please include your child's name, what period they have me for class and a return email address.
I hope you all have a great week!
