Expressions, Equations & Inequalities - 6th Grade

Essential Questions:

• How do you generalize a real world relationship with an algebraic expression?
• How do you generate equivalent expressions?
• How do you determine if two expressions are equivalent?
• What are the similarities and differences between equations and inequalities?

What You Need to Know:

• Solving an inequality or equation is answering a question
• Inequalities have an infinite number of solutions

What You Need to Be Able to Do:

• View one or more parts of an expression as a single entity
• Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables
• Identify when two expressions are equivalent
• Write and evaluate algebraic expressions
• Identify the parts of an expression
• Use substitution to determine whether a given number makes an equation or inequality true
• Solve one and two step equations
• Solve one step inequalities and graph the solution on a number line
• Apply the rules of exponents
