Welcome to

Math & Study Skills

Welcome to 6th/7th Grade Math and/or 6th-8th Study Skills! I’m thrilled to be your teacher and I look forward to working with each of you. I know we are going to have an exciting, interesting, and fulfilling year together. This is OUR classroom (virtual or not). We are a team. We must work together in order to achieve our goals. My goals are to provide a safe, nurturing, and interesting environment, help you better your growth mindset, and hope you learn to love math and become better organizers of your time and study habits. Your goals should be to show academic growth, get along with your peers, and come to class with a positive attitude. I have high expectations for all of you. I KNOW we are going to have a fantastic year together!

About me

My name is Mrs. Briggs. This year I will be teaching Study Skills and Special Education Math!

I have dual Masters Degrees in Business from UNM, concentrations in Management Information Systems (MIS) and Information Assurance (IA). Go Lobos!! My first attempts were graphic design and Mechanical Engineering (metallurgy changed my mind)! Ha!

After going through chemo, I found joy volunteering at my kids’ schools. Volunteering led me to be an educational assistant for special ed math. I LOVED it so much, I wanted to teach it! Still working at the school, I attended CNM at night and earned my dual teaching license in Regular and Special Education. I am one, LONG, 5 hour math test away from getting the triple license to teach at the high school level. I promised my family I would stop going back to college, for awhile.

I am a strong supporter of communication! I believe it is the glue that will bond our parent-student-teacher team. Together we can come up with skills/techniques to help your child learn in the way most effective for him/her. I am committed to making this a great year for your child and would love your support and participation in helping your child succeed. You can track what we are doing in class or see evidence of your child’s work in Google Classroom or through ParentVue.

Class Participation

Students will work individually, or online with partners/groups. All class interactions are expected to be civil, respectful, and supportive of an inclusive learning environment for all students. The best learning environment is one in which all members feel respected while being productively challenged. I am dedicated to fostering an inclusive atmosphere, in which all participants can contribute, explore, and challenge their own ideas as well as those of others. Every participant has an active responsibility to foster a climate of intellectual stimulation, openness, and respect for diverse perspectives, questions, personal backgrounds, abilities, and experiences. I encourage students to speak to me, the head of special education, the counselor, their advisor or administration if they have any concerns about classroom participation and/or our classroom dynamics.
