Hi! Welcome to the new school year!

My name is Josh Edmiston, and I'm excited to continue teaching English 9 and English 10 Honors in my fourth year here at Cibola. Welcome.

Despite our return to somewhat normalcy in the spring, in our present moment, it's difficult to say what this semester (and school year) will look like. If this is anything like the last, it will be important for us to experiment with different modes of learning in the classroom just as it will be imperative to maintain flexibility both within class and without. Our time together will be dictated by both of those threads, pandemic concerns or lack thereof.

In terms of topical focus, literature we might mess around with, and overall theme of the course, ninth grade English offers up a bit of a smorgasbord. Classics, contemporary, world literature, young adult...you name it, we'll get to it at some point. Rather than spend the year daunted by the sheer scope of it all, we will direct our efforts toward investigating and pushing back against sociohistorical narratives and complexities, discerning the interactions between culture and personal identity exhibited via the medium of literature, assessing how each in turn influences the reality or perception of the other, and perhaps ultimately ascertaining some degree of self-actualization through our deeper awareness of literature, culture, and our identities.

On this page, you'll find a bit of detail about our class together as well as quite a few important links for Google Classroom and weekly lesson plans.

As the school year progresses, you will likely find an increasing amount of details listed below--check back often to catch it all or monitor our year in flux.

Remind

Remind is a very simple way for both students and parents to receive near-immediate text messages from me. No phone numbers are ever exchanged, but we are able to stay in contact with a fair amount of ease.

To sign up for Remind, please send the following code as a text message to the number 81010.

  • 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7th periods: @6ke4a8g

  • 1st period: @6gd96ek

There is also an app for your phone, but downloading is not necessary to use the service.

Weekly Lesson Plan Folders

Weekly lesson plans can be found in the following Google Drive folders. I will keep them updated as much as possible.
