APS has decided to allow Cross Country to have our season in Fall of 2020. We still have a couple hurdles to get over. The Governor still needs to give final approval, but as of now, we haven't been given any indication that she won't.

Here are some important dates to know. Of course, this can all change, just like everything else has with little notice. However, this is what we have been told to prepare for:

September 14 - "Preseason" practice can begin. All that means is we are allowed to meet for practice in-person starting then.

October 5 - Official practice begins

October 10 - Week 1 of competition

November 27 or 28 - District XC Championships (note, this is Thanksgiving weekend)

December 4 or 5 - NM State XC Championships

(The rest of the XC schedule has not been released)

Cross Country is going to look different in 2020. Just be prepared for things to be different this year, but the guidelines are designed for your safety. As we've been told, XC gets to be the sport that proves that seasons can occur safely, and this can be done the right way.

General XC Guidelines:

  • 5 athlete pods during practice. No gathering of large groups before or after workouts. Arrive at practice, immediately begin workout, leave the practice site immediately after.

  • Must wear masks, even while running.

  • Small meets, maximum 100 people allowed at a meet location (includes coaches, athletes, and meet personnel)

  • No spectators allowed at meets

  • No team camps, no team gatherings. Arrive, warm up with your small group team, race, cool down, leave the meet.

The coaches will be making plans for practice here soon.

In the meantime...

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running."
