What Does an Elementary School Counselor Do?

Your elementary school counselor fosters the educational, career, and social/emotional development of our students. The goal is to support students in reaching their full academic potential and enjoy a positive school experience.

The counselor works with students, parents, and fellow staff members to help students receive the support needed to be successful. Interventions will be implemented based on needs assessments, surveys, community feedback, and district protocol in order to develop a comprehensive school counseling program.

Your counselor, will meet with students individually, in small groups, and in a whole-class format. Students are taught various coping strategies, skills, and methods to handle various challenges.

Other tasks include individual/whole-school crisis response, behavior intervention support, staff and parent consultation, various services for families in need, assistance with school-wide discipline policies, acting as a consultant for SAT/FBA/BIP meetings, leading Health and Wellness Team meetings, and supporting social skills and character programs to foster an inclusive school climate.

Students, parents, and staff members may request counseling services. All counseling services are brief and solution-focused. We also provide referrals as necessary for more intense services at parents’ request.
