Hi! I’m Mrs. English, and I’m so happy to welcome you to our math class at Atrisco Heritage Academy! I’ve been in education for over 24 years and with APS since 2013. I live in the AHA community with my husband, our youngest daughter and her girlfriend, plus a house full of pets—two chihuahuas, three cats, and a bearded dragon!
My oldest daughter, Katie, is a nurse in Seattle, WA, where she lives with her boyfriend. My youngest, Alice, is an educational assistant at a pre-K here in Albuquerque.
Outside of school, I enjoy cooking, painting, spending time with my sisters, and playing both PC and tabletop games.
One reason I’m passionate about teaching math—especially in special education—is because I’ve been there. I was diagnosed with dyscalculia (a math learning disability) as a student, so I understand how tough math can feel. That’s why our classroom is built on support, encouragement, and the belief that every student can grow. I can’t wait to learn and grow with you this year!
Hi there! My name is Benjie Michelle Clapp, but everyone calls me Mrs. Shelly 😊
I was born in Albuquerque and raised in Los Lunas, NM. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from UNM and spent many years teaching at UNM Valencia and Main Campus—everything from computer and study skills to college prep math. After a short adventure in Miami with my husband and daughter, I returned to New Mexico and continued teaching until stepping away in 2020 to homeschool during the pandemic.
Last year, I worked as an educational assistant at Albuquerque High and loved supporting students and teachers. Now, I’m thrilled to be back in the classroom co-teaching with Mrs. English! I love helping students find their strengths, grow in math, and share their stories. It’s truly a privilege to be part of your journey.
Outside of school, I enjoy baking, camping, playing tennis, stargazing, caring for my plants, and playing (badly!) Minecraft and Overcooked. I’m looking forward to a fantastic year together!
This class is built for learning, growth, and confidence. You’ll work with tools like graphing calculators, Desmos, Canva, Delta Math and iXL, take weekly Concept Checks to track your learning, and earn tickets for showing great effort and behavior.
Whether math comes easily to you or not, you’ll be supported. Our goal is to help you feel confident, capable, and successful—one step at a time.
