This tournament was named after a wonderful young soccer player who died during the halftime of a game on October 18, 1986. Bryan was a member of the Eldorado boys’ Varsity soccer team in both his freshman year and his sophomore year, the year he died. At 15, he had been declared healthy and good to participate in sports but he did have a known heart murmur.
On a beautiful Saturday morning, the Eldorado boys’ and girls’ soccer teams played consecutive games, 9:00 am and 11:00 am, at the Milne II field against visiting Mayfield. The girls’ team finished their game and stayed to support the boys. This group included two of Bryan’s sisters, Micki and Melissa, who were on the team at the time. His third sister, Kim, and Bryan’s parents, Betty Joe and Bill, were all in the stands watching. Half time ended and the boys stood up to return to the bench. As they were walking, Bryan collapsed and died on the field.
The Cline family was truly a soccer family with all four children playing on Varsity as well as club teams. Bryan was a bright student with a 3.8 GPA. He was showing strong leadership qualities, and was an all-around nice young man.
The family wanted to support the soccer community that Bryan loved being a part of, and through the Albuquerque Community Foundation established the Bryan Cline Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to a boy and a girl soccer player from Eldorado each year.
This scholarship is for players who represent the qualities of the fine person that Bryan was.
This tournament was established in Bryan’s memory a few years after his death.
