Time and funding
The biggest obstacle that prevented me from learning more is time. I wish I had been able to work longera t the museum. Also, staff were pulled in so many directions, which meant I had to jump right in and start to work. Further, attaining the funding needed to create more lessons and marketing for those materials impeded our ability to create additional trainings. (The marketing agency we used to standardize the educational materials for the teacher in-services and who we used to edit the videos for the teacher workshops were funded by a grant my supervisor attained a year ago. )
My lack of prior knowledge about the museum's collection:
Although, I have grown up listening to country music, which has afforded me 48 years of knowledge, I was not well-versed in the museum's collection. The reason for that is the museum is centered on the 1927 Bristol Sessions that occurred due to Ralph Peer. He helped discover the Carter Family, which became the First Family of Country Music, and he revolutionized the way artists are paid and sign recording contracts. Of course, I knew who Maybelle Carter was and that Johnny Cash had been her son-in-law, but I was ignorant of the impact of this family and those sesssions. I had to quickly become adept at understanding why these sessions meant so much to Bristol and the country music industry.
