They are excellent in helping your child work on needed reading skills whether its phonics, fluency, comprehension, love of reading, study skills and/or reading speed. SUMMER READING GAME BOARDS: I sent home the game boards from Multnomah County Library's Summer Reading program. Each student will take a game board home. The Summer Reading program is optional but a good way to encourage reading during summer break. There are some amazing prizes children can earn by doing the Reading Game boards! Please have your child read consistently over the Summer. I have extras if you need one.

TODAY! CLASS AWARD CELEBRATION! The class met their class points goal of 1250. They have voted to do a "Tech Day" today, Wednesday. It will also be PJ and Stuffie day. Students are permitted to bring in an electronic from home to play for 20 min. The technology is not allowed during any other time of the day.

DUE TODAY! FINAL 4th GRADE PROJECT: Due next Wed, June 11th. We are creating mini golf course. The theme is Greek mythology. I have included a slide show that has the myths we read together as well as instructions for creating a "golf hole". The hole should be 3-4 inches wide and high. REMINDER! OUTDOOR READING OPPORTUNITY: I told the kiddos, since the days are getting nicer, we might have some opportunities to go outside for reading behind our classroom in the grassy are under the tree shade. They loved the idea. I told them to check with you about bringing a beach towel or blanket they can use if they choose to go outside. Bringing a beach towel or blanket is optional They will have to keep them in their locker when we are not using them.

CHAPMAN SWIFT FUN(D) RUN: Friday, May 30th in Wallace Park. Another wonderful and amazing annual Chapman event where students run laps around Wallace park to earn money for our school. What we need are lots and lots of donations. Flyers were sent home. All are welcome to cheer on all our runners and walkers too. The curriculum has them using the Partial Quotient method of Long Division. I will be extending our lessons into next week for more review and practice. NEW! MATH - LONG DIVISION: Due next week. Late last week we begun a new unit of math on dividing a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number. The curriculum has them using the Partial Quotient method of Long Division. I will be extending our lessons into next week for more review and practice. NEW! LINK UP CONCERT FIELD TRIP: Link Up is a program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. Students sing and play soprano recorders while learning basic musical concepts from their seats with the Oregon Symphony on stage. Nearly every Portland Public School fourth grade student will participate in this concert on Thursday, May 1st at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. With nearly every seat occupied with students, there is limited space for chaperones. I will be sending home a letter about this field trip. Click the link to view/print the letter.

Today Students can bring in a blanket, stuffie and/or pillow, come wearing PJs and bring a flashlight. They'll be getting S'mores and hot chocolate while doing a non-tech activity of their choice, such as reading, board or card games with their friends. We'll turn off all the lights and have a roaring campfire playing on the big screen. This will certainly be lots of fun!
THIS MORNING! LIVE ROUNDUP: Please join us in the auditorium first thing this morning, 8am. Families are welcome to join us in the balcony. There will be singing, performances, Golden Awards, and announcements. It's a lot of fun.

TODAY! CLASS AWARD: Our class reached their goal of 500 class points last week. They voted to do a 20 minute Fort Time. Students can come dressed in PJs and bring a stuffy (no bigger than a backpack). They can also bring items to make a fort such as a blanket, sheet, etc... as well as a flashlight. All the items will be brought home after school. Our new class goal is 750 class points. Students have already earned over 100 points.
NEW! OBOB: The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading program for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Students, regardless of reading ability are welcome to join a team of 4-5 students, read a few books and participate in a school trivia contest against other Chapman teams. IMPORTANT! YELLOW FOLDER: Just to make certain we are on the same page. The plastic yellow folder must come to school every day. At the end of every day, students are told to put the yellow folder on their table and to take it when they line up. I scan the room for any left behind. At the beginning of the day, they must show me the folder when they line. The only exception is taking it home over the weekend, unless they have homework to complete over the weekend.

DONATIONS NEEDED! Chapman Fun(D) Run: We are at $13,600 and our goal is $50,000. This is our main fundraiser. Please help you child raise as much money as we can. Click link to view the flyer. Funds go directly to the Reading Results program, PE, student community outreach and teacher's assistants. The run will be June 7th. Students run laps, which raise funds for these programs.
