The Dean Model:
The Dean's Office welcomes students, parents, and staff to work together to ensure a safe and healthy campus here at Colony middle school.
The Dean serves as a student advocate and relationship builder within the school community. The dean works in partnership with students, families, teachers, counselors and administrators to support academic growth, personal and cultural well-being.
The Dean's Office is a primary point of contact for families and plays a crucial role in communication and coordination across academic, social-emotional, and behavioral domains and will ensure that each and every student is seen, heard, and supported on the path to greater independence, resilience, personal agency, and success as a "colony knight" in the real world.
What is Restorative Justice?
"Restorative Justice fs a. process to involve, to the extent possible, those who have a slake in a specific offense and to collectively identify and address harms, needs, and obligations, in order to heal and put things a right as possible"
- Howard Zehr, 1990 (pioneer in the field of Restorative Justice)
Restorative Justice is a compassionate approach to repairing harm and rebuilding community as an alternative to punitive forms of punishment, using the 5R's of Restorative Justice.
Restorative Justice (RJ) Circles are structured, safe dialogue sessions where participants (those harmed, those who caused harm, and support members) sit together to address conflict.
BE kind & BE respectful to everyone at all times
At CMS each student is held accountable for our school wide Code of Conduct: Be kind and respectful to everyone at all times; do what is expected; do it the best that you can. When issues arise, we work with our students in the SRC room to solve the problem and make better choices in the future.
The Dean’s office handles student discipline, implements interventions, and works with students, parents and teachers to resolve conflicts and address behavioral concerns.
positive behavior (PBIS) practices used to proactively teach and reinforce positive behaviors
restorative justice (RJ) approaches to discipline and other positive behavioral interventions will be implemented to build relationships within our community to prevent and respond to misbehavior and conflict as it arises.
The Dean’s office helps shape a safe, positive, and inclusive school environment, by working with teachers and other staff to promote positive social interactions, respect, and a sense of belonging. The dean will also promote inclusivity, respect, and engagement among all students.
The Dean collaborates with the student body to organize, plan, guide, and offer resources for student activities, events, clubs, and programs that foster a sense of community, inclusivity, and a positive school climate among students. The dean will also help oversee club activities, programs, sports, and other extracurricular activities.
The dean’s office offers support for students experiencing academic, social, or emotional challenges, and works with students, parents, counselors and administration to develop positive behavioral plans and strategies.
“Mindfulness practices” will be used in the dean’s office to help students develop emotional regulation, focus, and overall well-being.
The Dean collaborates with teachers, coaches, club sponsors and administrators to monitor student academic performance and implement interventions for struggling students.
The dean serves as a liaison between students, parents, and teachers, communicating important information and addressing concerns.
At Colony Middle School, we remind our students, teachers and parents:
"If you see something... say something."
Please report any issues to an adult at CMS as soon as you are aware of them. Early reporting results in a safer campus.
