Grade 1


First grade is a very exciting year of growth for your child at Westview! We use the reader's writer's and math workshop model as our daily focus. The goal is to have all students learn to work independently and cooperatively with others while becoming readers, writers and mathematicians. Your child's abilities will build on the foundation that was laid in Kindergarten with guidance and support in an engaging, welcoming classroom.

Units of Study Literacy instruction in District 196 is built on a constructivist learning theory where learners construct meaning together. It is a data driven approach to learning. Students learn to become managed independent learners while researching genre led inquiry units.
