Welcome to Echo Park!

May, 2017

Dear Echo Park Families,

The calendar is telling us it’s spring but the weather is telling us something quite different! Here’s hoping that spring makes a permanent appearance soon.

We are right on schedule with both construction projects! The new office/nurse’s office will be ready to occupy by mid June to allow for the summer demolition of the current space and construction of our new Engineering Lab that will be built in its place. The four-classroom addition with common space will be ready for the incoming 5th graders (current 4th graders) to occupy in August. New furniture is being selected and ordered for the new areas as well as for the entire school with the new elementary school (East Lake) serving as our model. The new wing will be completely outfitted with furnishings to start the year and all other classrooms spaces will start the year with new student desks and chairs. Bookcases and other storage pieces will be added to existing classrooms throughout next fall. As you can imagine the logistics of all of this makes it especially challenging which is why Echo Park will not be hosting any summer programs with the exception of summer library (dates and times to be determined), Bridge to School (for incoming kindergarteners) during the week of August 14-17 and Summer Assessments for all students scheduled for August 22 and 23.

As if all of this new construction and furniture is not enough, we are also planning and in the bidding stage of a brand new playground! Families have been surveyed and their input has been used to plan a new playground that will reflect our engineering focus while meeting the needs of all of our students and families. PTO has generously offered to fundraise for additional dollars to be used to further enhance our playground. More information will be coming from PTO regarding the fundraising. Construction will be started and completed over the summer months.

In addition to all the interior construction, parking lots will be reconfigured this summer and all busses will be picking up and dropping off in the back lot beginning next fall. Parent pick-up will be moved to the front lot. Be looking for a podcast with details coming out this summer on parking lots in addition to a virtual tour of the interior of the building!

Staffing and grade level classroom placements with a building map are being determined at this time and will be shared when they are finalized over the summer.

As you know, Echo Park was one of 10 recipients of a multi-million dollar federal grant last fall that is supporting some of the above projects along with the bond that passed in November of 2015. Monica Foss, our Magnet TOSA, will soon be sharing the latest Magnet updates and activities of which there are many, including garden plans.

As always, I thank you, the Echo Park community, for your continued support and understanding of the challenges associated with all of the construction and changes occurring within our building. Change is not always easy but the results will be amazing!
