Twenty-two fourth and fifth grade students participated this fall in Echo Park’s first foray into the challenging LEGO League competition, which is held in November and early December in the Twin Cities.. As a novice team, we started exploring the mechanics of how to build and program small LEGO robots. We greatly appreciated the Apple Valley High School mentors, both students and coaches, as well as a number of our students’ parents, who came to our twice-a-week after school meetings to help. In mid-October each student needed to decide if they were interested in participating in the formal competition or if they preferred to continue to build and learn robotics without the competition deadline. Each child chose to use this year as a training year and forego the competition, so we kept working on our creative robots. Next year’s formal competition is, however, compelling.
