Dr. Trevor Johnson - Principal

Welcome to the website of Dakota Hills Middle School. We are a school serving students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades with an enrollment of about 1,100 students. We are located in northeast Eagan, Minnesota, a southern suburb of Minneapolis and St. Paul. We have a dynamic staff of educators that love children, love teaching, and are committed to the success of each student. As middle level educators they identify with the unique combination of emotional growth and academic development that occurs during the young adolescent years.

Dakota Hills Middle School offers enthusiastic and challenging instruction for students with a focus on exploratory learning experiences, supporting inquiry and reasoning skills, and a focus on personalized relationships. Dakota Hills provides a balance of instruction in core academic subjects like math, science, social studies, communications, world language and language arts along with the vital exploratory and arts oriented experiences that come from music, physical education, technology education, art, and family and consumer science. Our students eventually move into Eagan High School for their grades 9-12 education.

Understanding, as we do, that all young adolescents experience amazing cognitive, emotional, and physical growth in the three years they are within our middle school setting, we are attentive to the academic, social and emotional growth of our students. We have a very active Parent Booster organization that eagerly supports our efforts, and our parents take an active interest and are involved in their children’s education. When you enroll your children at Dakota Hills, you will become a part of a strong partnership of parents, students, and staff in a setting that emphasizes academics, the arts, and athletics.

Jim Roberts - Assistant Principal

My name is Jim Roberts and I am very proud to serve the students, parents, and staff of Dakota Hills Middle School as the school’s Assistant Principal. I began my career in education in 1989 and have been a part of the Dakota Hills community since 1995. I received my administrative licensure through St. Mary’s University and my Master’s of Education degree through the University of Minnesota. My teaching certification is from the University of St. Thomas.

I thoroughly enjoy working at Dakota Hills Middle School with enthusiastic teachers, obviously energetic students and involved parents. I believe these three groups working together will continue to create a first-rate middle school. The students of Dakota Hills quickly discover the school is a fun and rewarding place to learn and begin their teenage years. Along with the school’s strong core academic subjects, there are plenty of opportunities for students to participate and excel in a variety of co-curricular programs ranging from sports, club activities, and the performing arts. Parents also find that Dakota Hills has an extremely positive learning environment for their child provided by very dedicated and committed teachers whose goal is to help our students reach their full potential.

Thank you for taking this opportunity to learn more about the Dakota Hills Middle School community.

Assistant Administrator - Melissa Tapper

Hello! My name is Melissa Tapper and this is my first year at Dakota Hills Middle School as an assistant administrator. I am a former student of Dakota Hills Middle School and an Eagan High School graduate. I love this district I grew up in and I am both honored and proud to work here!

I live in Eagan with my husband and three boys. Trenton is a student at Glacier Hills Elementary School, Colton is in preschool, and Tyson will be two this fall. We love camping as a family, traveling to new places, and being outside. I have a wonderful family and they are the reason I also love working in education.

I have worked in District 196 for 13 years. From an elementary teacher to a middle school math teacher to a middle school math coach for the district, I am excited to work with all the students, staff, and families this year. I received my administration license from St. Mary’s University and looking to complete my Educational Specialist Degree.
