During the first semester of Algebra 1, we did a deep dive into linear equations. We learned how to graph lines, determine the equations of lines, and calculate the slope of lines. While learning these skills, we applied them to hiking trails on Oahu. We went on two hikes to use as a foundation for our discussion of the relationship between slope and elevation. After we felt confident with the information, we ventured out to the Cross Trail on the APIS campus to find the elevation at 10 meter increments. Once we had the data, we plotted the coordinate points (distance, elevation) and determined the slope and equations of the lines in the elevation trails. Finally, students worked in pairs to write reviews of both the Hau'ula Loop Trail and the Cross Trail.
