After three months since its beta release, Hoyoverse released their newest title, “Honkai: Star Rail” to the public for free on the 26th of April, 2023. The game is a spin-off of one of their previous titles, “Honkai Impact: 3rd,” with its story taking place in an alternate universe.
You follow the main character’s journey with the Nameless, a group of characters that explore the universe on the Astral Express, a train that’s able to travel across the universe using the star rail. The Nameless set foot on each planet connected by the star rail, purging the presence of ‘Stellarons’ on each one. ‘Stellarons’ are mysterious objects spreading across the universe like cancerous growth; therefore the travelers show no hesitation in helping the planets get rid of its presence.
In terms of gameplay, Star Rail is a turn-based role playing game wherein your characters and the enemies take turns acting based on their stats. During battle, players will have to utilize the Weakness Break mechanic in order to win more easily. Elemental weakness differs from enemy to enemy, therefore players have to be smart in choosing which characters to include in their party. Each character has their own element and path that defines their skillset, so players have to examine which combination of characters would be most suitable for combat.
Like previous titles Hoyoverse have come out with, Star Rail has its own gacha system dubbed “Warp” wherein players can spend in-game currency to try their luck on shiny five-star characters and equipment. Predictably, your progress in the game will depend on how much you spend and also your luck on the gacha. Different microtransactions are available for players to obtain more in-game currency, however, from experience, the game is quite generous in giving out in-game currency and Warp Tickets so it shan’t be necessary to pay unless you get into the farther stages of the game.
Personally, I have been enjoying the game so far. While it’s been a bit boring waiting for new quests and content to come out, it's understandable that there’s only so much to do so far because the game has only been out for around three weeks at this point. I was a former “Genshin Impact” and “Honkai Impact: 3rd” player myself, so I was very much looking forward to this new release. I am glad to say that it did not disappoint. If you enjoyed playing either of the two titles I mentioned, you might enjoy this one as well. You don’t have anything to lose, so why not try it for yourself?
