What is EDSA People Power?
The People Power Revolution also referred to as the EDSA Revolution or the February Revolution, took place from February 22 to February 25, 1986, in the Philippines, mainly in Metro Manila. In opposition to electoral and regime violence, there was a steadfast civil resistance movement. When Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. was assassinated upon his return to the Philippines from exile in August 1983, the term "Yellow Revolution" was coined in reference to the protest strategy of wearing yellow ribbons (a reference to the Tony Orlando and Dawn song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree"). It made headlines when the "Revolution That Stunned The World" occurred. (Wikipedia, 2023)
What is the Purpose of EDSA Power?
Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), the main thoroughfare in Metro Manila, was the starting point of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, which united millions of Filipinos from all walks of life in an attempt to overthrow President Ferdinand E. Marcos' dictatorship and usher in a new era of true democracy and freedom. The idea behind this movement was not exclusive to Manila; peaceful demonstrations were also planned in a number of other cities across the nation. A nation banded together to regain independence, sparking a revolution that distinguished itself by using nonviolent tactics.
The events of February 25, 1986, altered the history of our nation and showed the rest of the world how persistent the Filipino people can be. It resulted in a period of calm. We have recognized the sacrifices made by everyone who has opposed the dictatorship throughout the years in order to appreciate this historic event. (GOV PH, n.d)
The Importance of EDSA People Power
Goals. According to mainstream scholarly opinion, people power movements are carried out with the aim of altering the present political system in a particular nation, and in most cases, establishing a democratic political system. The EDSA People Power Revolution was the outcome of a variety of related components that combined to produce a peaceful revolution that fascinated and inspired countless regime transitions all over the world. Even though it marked the end of the dictatorship and rule of Ferdinand Marcos, it is still viewed as a struggle that affects all generations, in which we are asked to seek reconciliation for the past and create a better future.
