SUPPORT STAFF POSITIONS

The unit shall employ nonprofessional personnel in positions which function to support the educational program of the schools. All such support staff positions in the school system shall be established initially by the School Committee. For each new position, the School Committee will review an initial job description as prepared by the superintendent.

Support staff employees shall be those who work in the following general areas:

A. Secretarial staff

B. Instructional aides (defined as those who devote at least 50 percent of their work time to assisting one or more certified teachers with instruction)

C. Non-instructional aides (defined as those who devote at least 50 percent of their work time to activities other than assisting with instruction)

D. Custodial staff and maintenance staff

E. Pupil transportation staff;

F. Other non-teaching personnel.

Although positions may remain temporarily unfilled, or the number of persons holding the same type of position may be downsized in the event of a reduction in force, but only the School Committee may abolish a position that it has created.
