STUDENT PLACEMENT-- GUIDELINES (B.R.E.S.)

Grade placement for each student at Boothbay Region Elementary School will be made on an individual basis, in keeping with the belief that appropriate instruction should be offered to all students in a progressive and sequential way. The level of instruction in each grade is not a single level but rather a series of levels intended to meet the various needs of the students.

Timeline

A. Based on preschool screening, the assessment team may make a recommendation to the parent(s) for student placement in the Early Kindergarten Program.

B. For students in other grades, Child Study Teams will review grades for those students who may not be placed in the next grade at the end of the school year.

C. The Team will arrange conferences with the parents of those students. A record of the conference will be placed in the student's educational record.

D. The same procedure for conferences and record keeping will be followed at the end of the third ranking period.

E. The final decision for placement will be made midway through the fourth ranking period. Parents will be notified by letter, with a copy of this letter going into the student's cumulative folder.

F. The final decision will be entered on the public rank card in the cumulative folder.

Placement

A. Decisions for placement will be based upon criteria developed by B.R.E.S. staff.

B. Parents are encouraged to provide input as the decision regarding their child's placement is being made. This will be accomplished by conferences with the Child Study Team and its individual members.

C. Should the placement of a child be adamantly opposed by the parents, the student will be placed (not promoted) in the next grade and the parents will be required to sign a waiver option validating their request. The waiver must be received by the school no later than the last day of that school year. The waiver will become part of the student's permanent school record.

D. If parents are opposed to placement of their child in the Early Kindergarten Program, the child will be placed in Kindergarten. The parents must sign a waiver option requesting this placement, and it will become part of the child's permanent school folder.

E. The progress report and the student's permanent record shall read "placed by parental request."
