Learn to Type - build keyboard skills (save time in the long-run):

Some require parental permission to use.

The ones below provide additional practice to the one we do in class. The first one is the easiest to learn from; the other ones help increase speed and accuracy when students have already learned where the keys are. They are more of a game. Compete against your best time or compete against others (Nitro).

Computer Coding activities to help develop problem-solving skills:

**Most require parental permission to use now.

Code.org is the only one we are allowing at school, and we monitor it. The others may be used at home with parental permission and monitoring. Scratch is amazing, however it does have projects created by others that may not be appropriate for your child's viewing/running.

There are so many options out there for students. These are some of my favorites, and they are free (paid versions with more functions are available for some).

You will have to check to see if your device is compatible. Some are only available on tablets while others are available on all devices. Some may only work with Apple devices while others may only work on Windows and Android devices.

Online coding:

  • Light Bot - Help the little bot light up specific blocks. Learn the basics and then learn about procedures and placing repeating procedures inside another. This is a favorite of many.

  • Hopscotch - create a user name and password to save your work.

  • Scratch - sign up for free and save your creations.

  • Code.org - If your child likes Disney's Frozen, there's a coding game for that. How about Star Wars or Minecraft? You'll find a coding game for that. There are also many courses that your child can work through. This is the one we used during our "Month of Code" (actually five to six weeks) for our students in grades Kindergarten-5.

*Each student will be on a course that they will work on at school and out of school, if they choose. There will be classroom links in the Google Classroom for grades 1 - 5. Kindergarten will be on the Kindergarten page by teacher.
