Independent Study

Look forward to supporting your Independent Study Project (ISP).

An ISP gives UGS students the flexibility to work either closely with faculty or more autonomously to pursue learning opportunities not offered all year round in the regular curriculum.  Individualized guidance/preparation/application starts one academic term before intended ISP term. 

There are two main ISP pathways:

1. Instructor-Guided: Per UGS Program faculty and/or Academic Advisor's recommendation, Student engages in a group or an individualized project designed by Faculty.  During the ISP academic term, Student works under direct supervision, according to the schedule and expectations specified in the ISP Learning Plan Faculty provides, and submits the agreed demonstration of learning for evaluation at the end of the term.    WRT-2510, ENG-3510, MAT-3510 and SOJ-3510 are common examples of instructor-guided ISPs, among other that may be available in a given term. Application for this ISP pathway may be accepted as late as week 9 of the prior academic term, provided there is already a Learning Plan/Contract in place.

2. Self-Directed: Upon Academic Advisor's recommendation, Student defines the focus and scope of a project of their own, and works with an approved ISP Evaluator to co-create an ISP Learning Plan/contract.  Once the ISP academic term starts, Student works autonomously and submits the agreed demonstration of learning for evaluation at the end of the term.  Application timeline for this ISP option must start no later than week 5 of the prior academic term.

Because ISP prep and approvals involve a coordinated effort between the ISP program with Student, Academic Advisors, ISP Evaluators, and Faculty on a one-on-one basis, as well as UGS and Registrar's offices for support, application timelines listed above must be observed.
