ACMS Grade 6 Math
Ratios
About This Unit
Learning Targets
In this unit, you will:
Understand the concept of a ratio (KY.6.RP.1)
Use ratios to solve real world and mathematical problems (KY.6.RP.3)
make tables of equivalent ratios and find missing values (KY.6.RP.3.a)
use tables to compare ratios (KY.6.RP.3.a)
use ratio reasoning to solve real-world problems (K6.6.RP.3.a)
Important Vocabulary
Cross multiply:
multiplying the numerator of each fraction by the other's denominator
Double Number Line:
a diagram made of 2 number lines that helps students more easily “see” that there are many equivalent forms of the same ratio.
Equivalent Ratios:
Ratios that name the same comparisons.
Multiplicative: having the power to multiply
Proportion:
A statement that two ratios are equal - two fractions that are equal, (e.g. 3/4 = 6/8)
Ratio:
A comparison of two numbers. Example: 3 : 4, 3/4, or 3 to 4.
Scale Factor:
a number which
scales
, or multiplies, some quantity
Simplify:
to rewrite an expression in a way that means the same thing but is simpler (or shorter)
Tape Diagram: a
visual model that uses a rectangle to represent the parts of a ratio.
Value:
a number that a variable or expression can equal
Activities at Home:
Practice finding ratios and equal ratios by finding equivalent fractions.
Create ratios for objects around the house. For example, the ratio of male shoes to female shoes.
A ratio is a comparison between two different values.
