The Department of Guidance and Counseling is committed to providing a wealth of information and resources for the parents and students of Alvin ISD. Our students' social, emotional, and mental well-being is of the utmost importance. Each month, this newsletter will contain information and tips to help you educate and spark conversations with your child(ren) about the importance of social emotional learning and mental health/wellness. Below you will find links to resources for both parents and students as well as a feedback form to ensure we are covering topics important to the families of Alvin ISD.
Children may not always directly tell someone when something is wrong. Changes in behavior can sometimes be a signal that a child needs support.
Possible signs to be aware of:
Sudden changes in mood or behavior (withdrawal, aggression, anxiety)
Decline in school performance or attendance
Unexplained injuries or frequent complaints of physical pain
Fear of going home or being around certain individuals
Changes in sleep or eating patterns
These signs do not always mean abuse is occurring, but they may indicate a need for support.
Open, consistent communication is one of the strongest protective factors.
Tips for parents:
Ask open-ended questions (e.g., “What was the best and hardest part of your day?”)
Listen without interrupting or immediately correcting
Validate feelings (“I’m glad you told me. That sounds really hard.”)
Reassure your child they can come to you about anything
If you have concerns about your child or another student, support is available.
Reach out to your child’s school counselor
