ACTFL Standards

All educational content areas have state-mandated TEKS that help teachers and campuses know how to measure student success. In most content areas, the TEKS are very specific, but for Foreign Language, the TEKS are so broad that they do not provide enough guidance for teachers. You can find the Foreign Language TEKS below.

Because the TEKS are so broad, Alvin ISD uses both the TEKS and the ACTFL Standards to measure student achievement. The ACTFL Standards measure student fluency in reading, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking. By the end of their first year in Spanish, students should be between a Novice-High to Intermediate-Mid range. See the chart below for more information.

***Speaking a language is the LAST stage of language acquisition. Students will NOT be comfortable speaking about themselves, though they will have the technical knowledge to do so at the end of this year.***

Additionally, because it is proven to increase student comprehension and fluency, we will be working towards the class being taught 90% of the time IN SPANISH!
