The primary focus for the 1st nine weeks is preparation for the All-Region Band try-outs. Every student in Symphonic Band 1 is required to prepare for Region Band Auditions (Performance Grade). The All-Region Band try-outs will be held at Friendswood Junior High, on Saturday, October 25th. Mark your calendar now, this is an “all-day” event.
Here are some frequently asked questions:
What is the All-Region Band?
The All Region Band is an honor group composed of students selected by audition from the junior high schools in Region 17. This is the highest individual honor a band student can achieve at the junior high level.
What materials make up the audition and how does my student prepare?
The audition is made up of two main components:
Prepared scales (by memory)
Two Prepared pieces of music (etudes, not memorized), Percussion- 3 etudes: Snare, Marimba, and Timpani
Preparation:
Students will have section rehearsals with Mr. Sharp and Mrs. Cone to learn scales and etudes. Additional masterclasses during and after school with highly qualified professional teachers will be provided to assist in student preparation.
Students will be frequently tested over the audition music (live playing tests and submitted recordings)
What if my student is selected for the All-Region Band?
If your student is selected for the All-Region Band, they will rehearse and perform with all the students selected for the All-Region Band on November 14th (sectional rehearsal) and 15th (clinic/concert). If a student places high enough (1st or 2nd chair), they may be selected to the All-Region Orchestra and rehearse and perform on January 16th (sectional) and 17th (clinic/concert).
There will be more detailed explanations given in class about the All-Region process. Please discuss the process with your student for more clarification. More information will be coming home as we approach the audition date.
