Week 27-28 - Drypoint Intaglio Printmaking
We finally get to use the printing press that was donated through Donors Choose!!! We have collaborated with S.A.V.E Animal Coalition in order to create artworks to raise money for homeless pets. Students can volunteer at the Paws in the Park event in order to sell their artwork and raise money for such a wonderful cause. This was by far the most fun project we have done this year!

Week 11 - Rodeo Burn Out! Kusama Pumpkins
We are all SUPER excited for Halloween at NRJH! My students are starting to approach what I liked to call, "Rodeo Burn Out". They've been working for several weeks on their rodeo grid drawing and desperately need a break to keep them from rushing through their projects. I decided to celebrate this week with Yayoi Kusama!
We're using oil pastel on colored paper. We talked about high contrast colors, use of complimentary and split-complimentary color schemes and picking colors schemes that look good and create contrast. They're having fun and I think they're enjoying the diversion.

Week 7 & 8 - Mixed Media Still Life
Students are completing their mixed media this week. Most have used a variety of random still life I've acquired this year, but some did use their shoes! My example is on the right, using pencil, pen and Prismacolor.

Week 5 & 6 - Mixed Media Still Life
Drawing Labs went well with some great results. This week we start on making a mixed media collage. Students are using different types of papers and creating an abstract collage. We are then white-washing their paper with tempera to create a more unified surface to draw on. Students will be drawing still life from observation and incorporating written elements to their drawings. Many steps but I think they will like the end result.

Week 4 - Contour Line Drawing
Now that sculpture is winding down and most students have uploaded their final projects into Google Classroom, we are moving on to drawing from observation. This week we introduce "Drawing Labs" and have begin exploring blind contour and contour line drawing. I'm taking a new approach to this lesson and allowed the kids to use dry erase markers to "trace their face" on the double-sided mirrors. I'm trying to get students to draw what they see, by literally tracing their faces before we begin working on paper. For whatever reason, this is a brain buster for kids. They are so used to drawing from imagination that I really have to force them to start drawing the actual shapes, curves and lines they see in front of them. It's really hard for some but even my most stubborn students are finally understanding this! Once they figure it out, they start on paper.
