Week 30 - Spring Show!

McNair Junior High hosted this year's annual Spring Art show, including all junior high work from around Alvin ISD. My student Althea N. took home the gold medal for her koi fish alebreijes sculpture! Yeah!

Gold medal winner Althea N. mugging the camera with me. She was VERY happy despite her expression!

Week 26-28

Art 2 and Art 1 students participated in Paws in the Park this year! They created some of the most beautiful artwork I've seen this year and I am so thrilled they had the opportunity to volunteer to help S.A.V.E Animal Coalition. Below are only a few of their amazing productions!

Week 24 - 26 - Sgraffito Plates

For the second clay assignment of the year, I decided to introduce students to creating slump molds from every-day materials. The surface application was sgraffito, using underglazes and clear glaze. Students used sgraffito tools in order to carve away negative space on leather hard clay. This project helped prepare them for the next assignment: drypoint intaglio printmaking.

Week 20-24 - Clay Spirit Animal Alebrijes

After finishing a lesson on the Mexican folk artist Pedro Linares, students designed their own spirit animal by researching different resources online. They sketched and started creating clay animals in clay. Students used underglazes to paint colorful patterns and lines on their artwork, and finished with a clear glaze.

Week 5 - Collagraphs in a Western Theme

We begin this week with printmaking! Students will be creating collagraphs in a western theme for our Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art competition. Because it's not permitted to publish student artwork during this time, I've decided to show you our progress using my own collagraph example.

Students watched several videos this week explaining the process of creating different types of collagraphs. We watched artists use matboard, cardboard and scrap textural materials to create their prints. Art 2 students can use my photo resources or their own photographs to create their projects. I started mine with a photo of one of my favorite chickens.

Week 4 - Layered Collaborative Mural

Not TOO shabby! Some of the ribbons didn't align but we will fix those when we have a little more time. I think the overall project was successful despite the alignment issues with grid-drawing. Next week we start collagraphs!

Week 3 - Layered Collaborative Mural

Students are finally putting together painted squares to reveal the mural. Still lots of tweaking needed but we are getting there!

Week 2 - Layered Collaborative Mural

Students started working together last week, looking through possible collaborative mural ideas. We settled on a layered ribbon mural idea. Each student will complete two 12"x12" squares and we will put this puzzle together on our bulletin board.

8.31.18 Practicing painting gradients in tempera paint today. Mixing tints of white and learning how to blend colors to create highlights and shadows. A work in progress!

8.30.18 Art 2 students have finalized their parts of the mural. We've finished fixing alignment issues and will start paint Tues!
