Art1 High School (8th grade only)

Course Description:

This class is an advanced level course to prepare students for art at the high school level. In this class, we will cover techniques of common art materials, elements and principles of art, art history, cultural influence of art, and careers. However, students in this class will also be expected to create artwork that is acceptable on a high school level. Students will learn how to develop and produce a concentration, find their artistic voice and be expected to work outside of class. Students in this class will be expected to already have knowledge of basic art materials and methods.

This class will include advanced ceramics, independent problem solving, charcoal, sketchbooks, peer critique, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, fibers, advance color pencil, principles of design, concentration, portfolio and digital arts.

**Warning** This class is for High School Credit! This is not a blow off class to hang with your friends. This is for High school credit.


Objectives:

  • Learning to pace oneself, keep up deadlines, and maintain quality work will be necessary.

  • The students will work on improving their skills in drawing and painting.

  • The students will use and explore a variety of art media, which may include pastels, colored pencils, oil pastels, collage, clay watercolor, digital and 3d media.

  • Students will enhance their work with understanding of various artists, style, and history.

  • Students will be expected to keep and use a sketchbook both in and out of class.

  • Students will explore self expression and develop a stream of consciousness in their artwork.

  • Students will learn to analyze and evaluate the relationships of elements and principles of art and design in their own artwork as well as in others.

  • Students will develop a portfolio and a digital portfolio and build upon previous art skills.

  • Students will be introduced to art from various cultures and history.

  • Students will be able to express their ideas and opinions verbally and written.


Required Materials: Due to Covid-19, students will need to have their own supplies and to keep them in their bags to bring to class.

  • 1 gallon or larger plastic bag with their name on it.

  • 1 9 x12 hard bound or hard spiral bound sketchbook, ( can be found at art supply stores, Half Price Books, Barnes and Nobel's, or online)

  • 1 12 pack regular #2 pencils

  • 1 pack of color pencils

  • 1 pack or black waterproof pens

  • Glue sticks and scissors

  • Erasers

  • Hand held pencil sharpener

Turning work in this year: We will be using both in class turn in, and google classrooms and scanning all work into a digital portfolio.

Optional Materials: Gel pens, markers, stickers, & scrapbooking papers, Some projects, students may want to bring their own optional supplies ( example: favorite color of yarn).

Donations: We can always use donations of paper plates, Solo cups, styrofoam cups & plates, plastic trash bags, baby wipes, Clorox wipes, Lysol wipes, tissues, magazines, newspapers, masking tape and Cut down cardboard, or cereal type boxes, Lysol Disinfectant Spray

Grading Criteria:

Tests and Projects 30%

Daily Work and Participation 70%

I try to have 2 grades a week.

Grading & Evaluation

My grading system is very simple. If you do your work, turn it in on time , and meet the objective with quality work, you will get a good grade. Poor craftsmanship or unfinished work will reflect in your grades. Incomplete work will not be accepted. Due dates are not optional, work must be completed and uploaded to your digital portfolio on time.

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 75-79

D = 70-74

F = 0-69

Playing games, talking or texting without teacher permission will effect your grades.

Guidelines:

In order to optimize your learning experience, the following guidelines must be adhered to in establishing a positive learning environment: No food or drinks allowed. No gaming or texting allowed. And you are expected to clean up the studio, your area and yourself every day.

Classroom Rules & Consequences

Classroom Rules:

Be prepared.

Be on time.

Be respectful.

Be responsible.

Consequences:

First offense: Verbal warning.

Second offense: Time out sent to another to write.

Third offense: Contact with parents or guardians

Fourth offense: Sent to office, Contact with parents or guardians

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Policy: According to Alvin I.S.D. policy, students are permitted to bring technology devices to use in class (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.) for educational purposes. The policy also states that if a student is caught with his or her device, it will be taken by the teacher and turned in to the office. Students will then have to pay the front office $15.00 (fifteen dollars) to get their devices back. All devices are to be turned off and put in your backpack starting at 8:00 am till the final bell of the day. Do not make Devices a problem In the classroom.


Art Shows: Students are expected to submit work for Art Contest and Shows including but not limited to, The Houston Livestock Show, & Jr. VASE. Work is expected to be completed on time. It is expected to be of high quality and original. All works are expected to be in the show or contest guidelines.

*Copyrights* & Source Material: Ideas can be taken from the internet or published sources when allowed but they can not be an exact copy of the work. Personal or family photos that have not been published or posted on social media are allowed. Sketchbook drawings are allowed most times. If I can find it on the internet, so can anyone else.
