Allow Me To Reintroduce Myself My Name Is....

I'm Coach Jakes, your chemistry teacher and the JV boys' basketball coach. This is my 14th year as an educator and my 2nd year here at Manvel HS.

I am the proudest member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2008 (WH08P!) I am a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc (the oldest and the coldest!). Beyond those things I am a family man, I'm active in my church community and lover of all things basketball. My wife, Monique, is an elementary teacher and we have 3 beautiful children. We are an Alvin ISD family as my wife teaches in the district and my kids attend district schools as well. My favorite motivational speaker is Eric Thomas (ET The Hip Hop Preacher...go check him out). I am an avid reader, both physical and audio books. I believe that personal growth and development is key and that there is a solution to every problem.

Effort is important to me. When you give effort you can reach and surpass your goals. I truly believe that each student can and will learn and will be successful. Our classes will have a family/community feel and I pride myself in getting to know each student individually to better serve their needs.

It is my goal and duty to push each of my students to be their very best in every aspect in class and beyond and I hope that you see that I am pushing you towards your success. This year will be one full of questions and answers, uncertainties that will breed confidence and problems that will be solved. Let's make something special happen!

Class overview

Chemistry is the ultimate subject. It combines every skill you've learned from all of your previous classes in a way that helps us to explore and explain the crazy things that happen around us on a molecular (really small) level. You will see the world in a different way as we investigate what happens, why it happens and how chemistry plays an important role. Whether we are talking about fireworks, cell phones or even food chemistry plays a part in EVERYTHING we experience and it is an AWESOME subject! Don't believe me? Just stick around, give a little effort and you'll see why chemistry is lit....literally!
