Alvin Elementary Art Teacher for 15 years
Alvin Elementary Teacher of the Year 2011

Hello, I am the Art teacher at Alvin Elementary. This is my 15th year teaching art and I love it! Your child will have art one day a week year round. While your child is with me in the Art Room they will have the opportunity to experience art through many forms. We will learn about artists, art history as well as colors, shapes, and other art elements. They will choose art projects to keep, some to share, and some to show, however all art work will go home in a special portfolio at the end of the year. I look forward to sharing my love for art and enthusiasm for learning with your child.

Art can get messy!

We will try to keep your child’s clothes clean. However, accidents do happen. If your child comes home with “ART” on their clothes try the following.

1) Scrape residue from garment

2) Pre-treat area with a little soap/detergent and water.

3) Wash as directed on garment (it may take a few washes).

We sure do have a lot of fun in ART!

UIL Art SMART

4th - 5th Grades Only

How Event will be Conducted
Students will compete in small groups by grade levels and will complete a timed, paper exam at
Manvel High School on Saturday, January 29th from 10:30 am-12 noon.

The UIL Art event does not consist of students creating art. This is an event involving the study of paintings from the National Gallery of Art and paintings/pictures from selected Texas museums. Students will need to demonstrate an understanding of art history and interpret ideas and moods in original artworks while making informed judgments about the artwork.

Part A of the contest requires students to identify the names of the 15 selected artists and titles of pictures selected randomly by district UIL coordinators, which are selected from the official list of 40 pictures.

Part B consists of 30 questions about art history and art elements characteristics of the 40 art selections.

Study Material

  1. If possible print out Practice Materials WITH Names to study as flashcards.

  2. Study 4-5 images at a time, focusing on artist's LAST name and tile of the work.

  3. Practice writing and spelling both the Artist's name and the Title of the Work correctly! (2 pts awarded if name or title is correct and spelled correctly! 1 pt if correct but misspelled!) NOTE: legible handwriting is very important for this event.

  4. Continue by adding more images and become familiar with them in detail.

  5. Use the Art Test sheet to answer the questions . You may want to break this into 3 or 4 parts to take as mini tests.

  6. Have an adult check Practice test and focus on points given for correct title/name and spelling.
