Dear Parents,
I hope you all had a lovely UAE National Holiday. This is the final newsletter this term. We look forward to welcoming all students on Sunday 5th January 2020.
We had a wonderful UAE National Day. I would like to thank the parents and volunteers who helped organisethe event. We hope to build on this with a much bigger and inclusive event for 2021 insha'Allah.
Confiscated items such as jewellery and mobile phones must be collected by parents by Thursday, otherwise we will return confiscated items to the students at the end of this week. We cannot store such items over the holiday period.
Thank you to those parents who attended my Google Training workshop last week regarding setting up and using P-codes for Google Classroom.
From January, all newsletters will only be sent via the P-code (Parent Code) Gmail e-mail address. This is because many of our links are shared on our Google Drive, and by having an e-mail address on our domain, it makes access to our shared files seamless. Please ensure you have checked and set up your P-code e-mail address for your household.
After extensive feedback from parents and discussion among the SLT, we are evaluating the proposition for an adjustment to the length of the school day and end of day timing. Our current proposal is to adjust the length of the recess/breaktime to avoid any impact on formal learning time during school.
We understand that this adjustment may not be convenient for all parents and we wish to gather formal survey feedback to help identify if there is consensus on the matter. This feedback will also be important for us to make a case in front of the KHDA to permit this modification to our school day.
We need KHDA approval if this is to happen - as part of this process a survey to parents is needed: please click here to complete the school day survey.

As you are aware , the safety of our students is always our first priority.
FS children had a great time during the National Day celebrations. The children enjoyed the performances and parade along with the UAE themed activities in their classroom. A big thank you to the Head of Community, Mrs Amanda Wilding, and the Emirati Mothers Group for organising such a great event.
This week marks the final week of Term 1 and it has been wonderful seeing all the children learn, develop friendships and grow in confidence throughout the term. The children are excited to welcome their parents to school for the Learning Showcase on Monday and celebrating their achievements in learning. We wish all the parents a restful Winter break and look forward to seeing the children again in January 2020.
We had an exciting week during the UAE National festivities! To remember the UAE's brave martyrs, ASCS performed a whole school prayer and 2 minutes of silence. Our students then discussed the importance of a martyr and the first martyr of the UAE in their classes. The next day, we held a whole day celebration of the UAE National Day by starting with an informative session during in - class registration about the UAE National Day history. Subsequently, students performed in arts and crafts, discussions, role play and many more stations inside their classrooms. We also enjoyed a performance presented to us by our ASCS students. To end the celebrations, we had a class party where we shared food! At ASCS primary, we aim at making meaningful educational links to important days as these.
We would also like to thank all our Year 1 and 2 mothers for attending the phonics workshop. We loved having all of you with us and enjoyed showcasing our strategies and resources presented in the classroom. A copy of the slides were also published via google classroom for our parents who could not attend. Many more training and coffee mornings are coming during Term 2 and 3!
National Day was a huge success and we were thrilled to accept both prizes for best dressed man and woman here in the Secondary school - with beautiful gifts gratefully and humbly accepted from our wonderful Emirati families.
We all enjoyed fantastic performances and fantastic hospitality - thanks to the incredible efforts and generosity of the amazing team of organisers and performers.
Students in Year 10 will be chosen to take part in this project in January. We are proud to be chosen as one of the partners of the Expo initiative.
Some of our amazing students and staff spent some time last week celebrating their 2020 success - here are a few words and photos from Ms Deepika from the event:

We are thrilled to nurture our partnership between home and school and this week Ms Samina (Subject Leader for English); Mr Mohammed and Ms Nahed (Subject Leaders for Arabic A - first language and Arabic B - second/ foeign language respectively) and Ms Assia (Subject Coordinator for French) shared elements of teaching styles and curricula which support our Languages for all policy here at ASCS. All our students have the fabulous opportunity to learn all three languages. They all took time out to answer many questions from parents, but should you have further queries re. these subject areas please do feel free to email them at any point and they will always be happy to expand on their presentations:

Bypass the controversy
Gulf Medical University holds an annual event for students in the UAE where schools showcase their talents and bring forward innovative ideas of what can be the future of the medical field in the form of posters, paintings and working models. A student from our school - Mobina Tazerjani of year 12 enrolled in the painting category and was able to win first place among forty eight different schools. She not only won the first place trophy but also a cash prize of 700AED along with two free physiotherapy sessions at Thumbay Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital.
The theme for year 12 was “Your vision of a healthy tomorrow” where Mobina was able to capture the judges attention with an abstract painting of water that represented the different types of water (carbonated, tap, ocean, etc) which had an underlying meaning of how it runs all over the world regardless of countries, shapes and ethnicities and how every living thing relies on it for its survival. These molecules represent humanity as a whole where the distinct origins of each water molecule represent every human being and the background that they come from. Yet they all require the other in order to flow. Without the physical connection between these molecules - or humanity as a whole a healthy tomorrow will never be achieved. This painting was called “Bypass the controversy” which en captured its true meaning.
