Dear Parents,
As-salaam aleykum
Review of Attendance Policy during Distance Learning
As we now embed Distance Learning, there are some concerns raised by teachers to ensure a safeguarding all students in the live sessions.
It is now an expectation that all students to have cameras on all the time in the Primary school during live sessions.
In the Secondary School, students must at least turn on the camera at the start of each live session whilst the register/starter activity is taking place and whenever directed by the teacher in the session.
Students who do not turn on the camera will be assumed to be absent as we need to ascertain a visual ID of each student. Please also remember that poor or non attendance can result in de-registration at the end of this term.
For further queries please contact our Child Protection Officer and Head of Community, Amanda Wilding on a.wilding@alsalamcommunity.ae
New Head of Secondary joining next week
I am delighted to announce our new Head of Secondary, Rani Iqbal, joining officially next week.
Her first initiative will be to host a Year 9 Parents/Students options presentation where students will be considered for their pathways of study in Year 10/11.
Later in the month after the formal assessments in Year 11, she will coordinate an event for students to choose their subjects for Post-16. I will also announce our new Director of Post-16 who will be joining us and she will meet each applicant for Year 12 for an interview.
We hope this provides some certainty for the new Academic year insha'Allah.

“Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you just want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.” - Stephen Hawking
Code.org is a non-profit organization and eponymous website led by Hadi and Ali Partovi that aims to encourage people, particularly school students to learn computer science.
Code.org is so interesting and challenging for people, it teaches simple block coding with some challenges to become the perfect coder along the road. It's fun with lots of famous celebrities inspiring you to be the best and become more driven than ever before. You can easily challenge yourself to do the harder levels and even one day in your life you’ll become a professional coder. Some puzzles on code.org are fun - when you program with some famous TV/cartoon programs. To conclude I would like everyone to challenge yourself and do some amazing programming.
My coding experience so far is great!Code.org and CS first have both been very valuable resources for enhancing my learning experience and advancing my coding practice. During this year, I have improved my problem solving, case analysis, code structure, etc.
I enjoy programming and I look at it as my future career. Everything in it is just fun; searching resources, trying new ways and testing them if they have worked keeps me looking for much more!
I am truly looking forward to more coding (maybe some python !) this year :)
Stay safe, Leena.
Code.org is so fun for students it teaches basic block coding with some challenges that occur along the journey to becoming an ideal coder. It is fun with lots of famous celebrities encouraging you to become the best and making you more determined than ever. When I use code.org it determines me and encourages me to do my best, never give up and be the best coder that can ever be and I will never give up on my dream.
Year 8’s student experiences will follow soon………………… Keep watching this space…Until then...
Stay Safe !!

Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners,
I hope that this message finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to provide updates, with regards to the End of Course Assessments, for Years 11 to 13, that have commenced this week.
Firstly, I would like to comment on the successful start that we have made to End of Course Assessments, which have been very positive. As with any new approach and unique situation, there are of course different challenges and improvements that need to be made, however, I am delighted to report that the guidelines and procedures that we have put in place have proven to be very effective.
In terms of continuing to improve our End of Course Assessments, there have been slight revisions made to the instructions, such as allowing learners to turn down their volume so that they can hear the invigilator, while minimising background noise. These changes are minor and slight adaptations of guidelines which have been shared, and are discussed with learners at the start of each assessment.
Additionally, while punctuality and attendance is very good, I would like to remind all learners to ensure that they are on time for reporting to the assessment. Given the context of the situation, being that we are conducting online assessments, there are instructions and procedures that need to be established before starting the assessments, which are disrupted when learners do not report for them on time. I am sure, as parents, you will support us by encouraging our learners to be on time.
As always, I would like to thank all members of our community for their positivity, collaboration and continued efforts to ensure that the End of Course Assessments have started successfully. In the coming weeks, we will be looking at assessments for Key Stage 3, as well as Year 10, and information will be sent when final plans have been finalised. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or any feedback.
Respectfully yours,
Mr. Harvey Furniss
