31st May 2020 Edition
Dear Parents,
As-salaam aleykum
I hope you had a restful Eid.
As we enter the final month of the final term of this academic year, I am keen to keep the momentum of distance learning
Year 9 CAT4 tests
I had originally instructed the Secondary School to carry out CAT4 tests for specific Year 9 students this week.
Unfortunately, GL will not permit remote assessment from home; the alternative is to bring small groups of students to school to sit the assessments in a socially distant but supervised manner. The recent announcements by the authorities have not been specific if educational institutions can have groups of (over-12 years of age) students on site.
Therefore as a precaution, I have had to postpone the CAT4 tests until further notice. I am very sorry for any disappointment this will cause students, parents and staff.
Director of Sport
I am delighted to welcome our new Director of Sport who will join in August 2020. Luke brings a vast amount of expertise, experience and success in his previous roles and will take full advantage of using our excellent sports facilities to great effect. More details can be found below.

By the end of this week, we will be sharing Progress Reports based on the performance of our students since Distance Learning began - March to May.
These reports will be anecdotal and hence have written statements as feedback from the teachers.
This will be based on how well our students have transitioned into the new style of learning 'Distance Learning' -
We will also be issuing Certificates to congratulate the students for being resilient, hardworking, and adapting so well to the Distance Learning Programme.

Dear Year 11, 12 and 13 Parents or Guardians,
Our Year 11, 12 and 13 students have worked diligently in order to successfully complete their assessments. They have been highly praised for their levels of commitment and maturity during these difficult weeks.
At ASCS we believe in providing valuable opportunities for students to optimise their learning experiences. As part of our transition programme this year we are offering students the opportunity to complete free online courses on FutureLearn. FutureLearn provides a range of independent online courses in an array of career pathways delivered by renowned universities across the globe. These skills based short courses are accredited by reputable universities designed to suit students transitioning from Year 11 to Year 12, Year 12 to 13 or Year 13 to Degree level. The courses help students to develop independent learning skills in subject areas of their choice and prepare them for their next stage in their academic journey.
All students need to do is register on the following website: https://www.futurelearn.com/. The course materials and progress quizzes are free; moreover, accessible for all levels of ability, with the opportunity to gain accreditation from the respective university delivering the course. The following link provides you with the presentation recently delivered to Year 11, 12 and 13 during their year group assemblies on Thursday 28th May.

We would like to emphasise a minimum of 3 courses to enrol on; we encourage students to attend and benefit from valuable free University transition courses guided by their subject teachers.
On completion of the course the learner has the opportunity to be assessed by the university and obtain an accredited certificate.
We would like to emphasise the courses will not impact your child's final board assessment grade, these courses will contribute to the students' attendance % for the final report. These courses are an opportunity to browse quality academic material providing your child a taster into Key Stage 5 or degree level learning.
Year 11 Learners:
To support our learners, we are offering Year 11 the opportunity to pick 3 courses from the following list by Year 11 teachers. The students will select 3 courses of their choice and attend the respective teacher's lessons as per their usual timetable.
Miss Francesca Huber will be launching our new Post 16 blended Curriculum and options for after Year 11.
Would you like to find out more?
Please join us on the 9th of June at 4:00pm to find out about our exciting new subjects and more.
Stay tuned for season 2 which will happen later this year.

It also teaches us how to learn from the mistakes committed by leaders and people in the past. History helps us accept changes in society and develops in us the value of dynamism. This provides us with a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.
Studying History provides us with insights into our own cultures as well as appreciate other cultures, thereby developing cross-cultural awareness and understanding, which is of significant value in the UAE.
