Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our commitment to Parents/Guardians continues over the next two weeks, with the launch of our Parent-School association, Friends of Al Salam Community (FASC). This Thursday 7 November at 8:30am, there is an opportnity for interested parents to find out more about participating in this group. Further details can be found at the end of this newsletter.
We have our first formal parent-teacher meetings next week. This will be an opportunity to discuss with your child's teacher their end of academic year targets and progress so far. Appointment procedures will be e-mailed separately.
The Primary School (FS - Year 6): Wednesday 13th November (4pm to 7pm).
The Secondary School (Years 7 to 13): given its larger student population, will have two parent evenings on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th November both from 4pm to 7pm.
As we formalise arrangements and increase safety and security on our school site, parents/guardians will need to have school issued ID badges to have access to the site. Failure to do so will result in parents having to sign in and submit an ID to security at the gate.
In order to issue the school issued Parent ID badge, we need you to complete the following form urgently: Parent/Guardian ID Application Form
A friendly reminder to all of our parents to register using your Emirates ID with our Registrar to be compliant with KHDA regulations. This week we have started inviting years 4-6 to complete the process.
Year groups from FS1-Year 3 have been sent numerous emails to complete the formalities, we thank those who are now registered in Al Salam Community School. Those parents who are yet to register, we have extended for a final time and request you to please visit the school by Tuesday 5th November with both yours and your child's EID. There will be no further extensions.
Please be aware the maximum fine imposed for non-registered children by the KHDA is AED 50,000.

FS1 and FS2 children thoroughly enjoyed the 'Puss in Boots' theatre show held by Lollipop Productions last week. We loved seeing them in dress up in Pink for Pink Day too!
In FS1, the children are branching out their topic on Toys to learn about superheroes and identify what special skills and 'super powers' they each have individually. In FS2, the children are looking forward to continue learning about different helpers in our community who work together to help us keep healthy. Please refer to the newsletters sent via Google Classroom for more detailed information about the weekly learning objectives for this week.
We hope you enjoyed the reading book sent home over the weekend. Please remember to sign the enclosed sheet to confirm your child has read the book with you so that they can receive a new book. Please note, as per the letter sent previously, any lost or damaged books will incur a charge.
Ms Nisreen, Head of FS
We had a very exciting week in Primary School! We accepted the 30X30 Fitness challenge, celebrated pink day and enjoyed "Puss in Boots" live in our Multipurpose Hall presented by the Lollipop Moving Theatre.
We have also launched the Oxford Reading Tree reading provision. Every student should receive a book bag that includes a reading book based on their reading level. Please support your child in reading these books and send them back before or on the following Wednesday.
During KS2 English Language Classes, we use cooperative learning techniques where students - Think - Pair and share different ideas. We then switch with different partners and share again!
Ms Sara Head of Primary School
In Art classes we have started preparing for Flag Day across Year 1 to 6 which will be celebrated on November 3rd, 2019.
In Year 3, we have started a "Take Home Pet" project where students take home a pet and are motivated to write all about it. Every Thursday 1 student receives Larry and presents what they did with Larry over the weekend on Sunday.
Our first half term here in Secondary has been an extremely busy time. We have had some amazing events and so much student and staff engagement it is fantastic to work with such amazing people. Our student achievements have been impressive and noteworthy - here is a round up of just a few of them from the students involved:
Tuesday 15th of October, our school attended the 6th Young Business Talent Hunt held by Skyline University.
Our group (Mysha, Tola, Anam and I) participated in the Advertisement Design competition, where all participating groups were given a random product and were asked to present ideas of advertising it.
The product given to us was chocolate. We were asked to name our brand of chocolate and design a logo. We then had to advertise it by choosing only two modes of communication from the following: Video ad, Audio ad, Social Media ad and Print ad. Our chosen modes of communication were Audio (radio) ad and Social Media ad. We created a vegan brand of chocolate called Totally, our punchline being: Totally organic, totally vegan and totally tasty!
The judges were very impressed by our presentation and even mentioned that we have covered all the points required of us. They gave us a few suggestions on how we could improve our work in the future and congratulated us for our good effort. We are happy to say that we qualified for the final round of this competition on the 16th of October. It was a very eventful, exciting and fun for us! - Leena Mahmoud
Ms Jacqui, Head of Secondary School
I am thrilled to announce that one of our fantastic teams went on to win the cup - many congrats to all.
Collaborating with Emirates Environmental Group, they have arranged plenty of activities for schools to take part in throughout the year such as beach clean ups and tree planting. There are lots of competitions and debates that are held as well.
With the help of our school we aim to go green and sustainable by taking part in the Simply bottles initiative. We will be placing baskets and recyclable bins all around the school to collect as many plastic bottles as we possibly can! We will soon be organising an assembly to further explain our goal as well as learn and share ideas of how our school can go green.
We look forward to working together as a community at Al Salam to help make our school sustainable and protect the Earth! - Amirah Mohammed!
Mental health awareness day is celebrated on October 10 every year with the objective of raising awareness on issues and ways in which one can take care of one’s own mental health.
This October sixth form students from Al Salam Community School visited a Mental Health Awareness Exhibit organized by Amity University.
Many schools were invited to share their ideas and programs that they have initiated in their schools in order to cater to their student’s mental health.
The exhibition also included different Non Government Organizations (NGOs) that are working with students of determination making a difference in their lives on a daily basis. The event focused not only on different mental health issues but also on different ways by which one can gain and keep a check on one’s own mental health.
We recently sent out a full list of our exciting After School Activity programme. I have provided the link in the newsletter in case you missed it. Please use the link to register and sign your child up for their preferred activity. As part of Al Salam's commitment to an accessible programme of extra curricular enrichment, we will be covering the cost of 2 activity sessions for every child registered in an after school activity. Children will therefore have a total of 12 sessions for whichever activity they are registered for.
Pink Day! This week our children wore the colour pink to promote awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness. Here are some pictures of our children for you to enjoy.
On Thursday we welcomed Lollipop Theatre to our school and all of our students had the opportunity to watch a theatre production of the kids classic, Puss in Boots. Here are some pictures of the children enjoying the show.
Our students have accepted the 30X30 Dubai Fitness Challenge! Every day, during morning assembly, students lead and participate in a variety of exercises to energize them with their teachers!
How often do you get the chance to have an unforgettable experience with everyone in your school? For the first time ever, Sheikh Zayed Road will be closed off to cars and open to you, your students, teachers, staff, parents and the whole Dubai community. Taking place at 6am on Friday, November 8, 2019, the Dubai Run is part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge, and is a great opportunity to bring your whole school family together to be active and have a great time with others (as well as take a few memorable selfies!).
