23 April 2020
Dear Parents,
As-salaam aleykum
Our new Head of Secondary and myself have been planning for many weeks and we have redesigned the curriculum in Year 10 for a launch in September 2020.
I am delighted that the new approach with pathways will ensure success for all students in the current Year 9 going into Year 10 in September insha'Allah.
Reports have been issued from Cycle 2 for the rest of the Secondary School. Primary School reports will follow next week. This provides you with some reassurance of the progress your child has made prior to the commencement of Distance Learning.
Lastly, may I take this opportunity after 1 month of Distance Learning, to benchmark the next month with Ramadan: A month for for reflection, fasting, patience and generosity!
Thank you for such great support to all the teachers and staff at ASCS. I would like to wish you a peaceful commencement to this blessed month and extend my best wishes to the students of Years 11, 12 and 13 as they prepare for the final end of course assessments, insha'Allah.

Launching the First Arabic Channel in Al Salam Community School
Students were practicing on presenting short episodes for teaching Arabic for non-Arabs. For that, we created the first YouTube channel to teach Arabic in our Al Salam community, and the program was presented by our non-Arab students. They spoke about many topics in a simple way. This was a very good experience for our students to show their creativity and their confidence in speaking the Arabic language.
The program ON AIR WITH AL-SALAM for teaching Arabic for non-Arabs will take place once a week.
Our host, Rojan, is a ninth grader at Al Salam Community School, who presents to you how to introduce yourself to others in Arabic under supervision of her teacher Mrs. Nahed.
The school participated in a holistic approach for Arabic language learning through a leveled reading program designed to advance the quality of Arabic language fluency and literacy.
A rich platform of hundreds of diverse books, videos, lesson plans, worksheets and games, pedagogically classified based on rubrics are aligned to scientific learning outcomes and various national regional curricula. We started this program with all Year 7 students, and they will tell you all about it in the videos:

As part of our efforts to enrich the educational experience the Islamic Department organized an online Quiz on ‘’Isra’ wal Miraaj’’ the momentous journey made by the prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Even though we are poised for a different kind of Ramadan amid the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important to keep in mind that we can still perform the holy month's core activities of fasting, building our relationship with the Qur’an, connecting with and doing good to family and friends, and helping those in need, we should be grateful that we have ample opportunities to do these acts of worships
We will be running quite a few activities during this month as reminders and encouragement to our students, to gain knowledge and to do good.
Among these are
As a step towards these activities, we had the year 8 assemblies about Ramadan on the 22nd where a presentation was shared with the students incorporating information and reminders about this special month. In 8C beautiful Ramadan planner was also shared by Mr. Omar which is an excellent means of organizing the month and getting the most out of it insha Allah.

Ramadan Mubarak!
Alhamdulillah, the holy month of Ramadan is just about to start. Considering the current situation, it is going to be both exciting and challenging. As we become more accustomed to the quarantine based lifestyle, it is time for us to start preparing for the upcoming Holy month of Ramadan in the best possible manner. Despite the challenging environment, it is time that we remind ourselves and those around us to make the best of the spiritual and festive opportunities that Ramadan brings.
To keep everyone engaged and moving, we have come up with a 30 Days 30 Deeds Challenge for our students. Every day students will get a deed to do and share their experience with us either by pictures, messages or by simply writing us an email about it. As parents we would like you to encourage your children to participate and practice these deeds on a daily basis.
What’s the catch?
Well there is nothing in comparison to what they will gain from Allah - ASCS has also some incentive set up for the students. Students who will be able to complete at least 15 deeds and share it with us will be given certificates on EID day inshAllah.
We hope and pray that this challenge will not only give students the opportunity to make full use of the bounties that the holy month of Ramadan brings, but also help them develop their personalities and become better individuals.
Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners,
I hope that this message finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to provide further updates regarding End of Course Assessments, in order to provide answers to frequently asked questions and to provide links to all relevant documents that have been shared previously, so that they are easily accessible in one document.
Firstly, it is essential to ensure that any answer papers that are submitted, are done so in a timely fashion, but more importantly, in a way that ensures that their answers are able to be read clearly. With this in mind, can I ask all learners to download an application called “CamScanner”, which is free to use. Also, to please ensure that they practice using the app; taking and submitting photographs, converting them via the application to PDF files and uploading them to Google Classroom.
Additionally, learners should remember that only 2 tabs should be open during the assessment (the assessment question paper and Google Meets). We may ask learners to share screens at any time, and even to press “Alt+Tab”, or any other quick key that is deemed necessary at the time. Learners must practice sharing the screen on Google Meets, as we will be expecting this to be done extremely quickly for their assessment to be considered valid, as it should be a process that takes a few seconds at most.
It should be noted that attendance and punctuality was good during the Arabic and Islamic assessments, last week. However, it should be noted that absences will result in the paper being ungraded, as would be the case in board examinations, in order to maintain the integrity of the assessments. Additionally, late starters may receive less time to complete their assessment, finishing at the scheduled end time, despite starting late. If there are technical issues, please contact Ms. Joan either by email, secondary@alsalamcommunity.ae, or by phone, 052 383 0976. This should be done at least 5 minutes before the start of the assessment for us to consider providing alternative solutions. Though we will try our best to contact learners who appear to be late, we can not guarantee that this will be possible, given that there is only a fifteen minute window between entry and the start of the assessment. We encourage learners to be motivated and responsible, and ensure they are attending their assessments on time.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude and thanks for all of your positive contributions and our continued collaboration. Below, I have provided links to documents that will be useful, which includes responses to Frequently Asked Questions that have been provided by parents and learners.
As always, please feel free to continue to contact me, or use the FAQ Google Form, if you have any further assessment related queries, suggestions or comments. As always, I hope you remain safe, positive and I wish you all a blessed Ramadan.
Respectfully yours,
Mr. Harvey Furniss
