Dear Parents,
As-salaam aleykum
As we complete the 4th week of Distance Learning, I would like to thank the vast majority of you and your children who have engaged with DL so well. Thank you!
I do need to remind the parents that a small minority have not attended regularly. This is a concern. The KHDA states 21 days absence could result in non-promotion to the next academic year. Having had 20 days of DL, Sunday is indeed the 21st day. This could be a serious risk for a very small minority of students. Please ensure your child attends and contributes to the learning in the classes as per the timetable.
We have designed an expansion of our provision of subjects and pathways for GCSE and AS/A level. More details will be sent early next week. In mid-May our new Head of Secondary, Rani Iqbal, will be offering a parent and student presentation regarding the new pathways and what subjects your child can study to help shape a very successful future for them insha'Allah.
End of course assessment will help shape the pathways so it is very important, Year 9 in particular, focus on all of their learning in the current DL sessions.
By the end of next week, Ramadan approaches, and this could be the first one in our generation of being in mass physical isolation. More details will be sent about timings, once the KHDA confirm with schools.
Lastly, as always spend time offline, away from screens and devices this weekend, to reflect and refresh!

Students are engaged and enthusiastic to join sessions and meet with their teachers and peers. In primary, we are constantly updating our timetable based on our parents feedback to accommodate all families. We have live sessions in the morning and evening and our slides have recorded video tutorials to support all of our students. The coming 2 weeks will give us an opportunity to assess students through online quizzes, learning showcases and checking student work.
Our students also prepared art and thank you notes to thank all the health care professionals in the UAE and around the world!
Please follow us on Instagram @ascsdubai to see our students pictures!
Given the situation we are in, it is the best time for our children to learn various real life skills around the house, explore new talents/ hobbies, and spend quality family time together.
Take pictures / videos of your family doing various household chores together like gardening, organising your home, playing family games, exploring new talents/ hobbies, family fitness routines, etc. and share them with us.
We will be happy to share these on our school social media platform.
We look forward to receiving your pictures/ videos.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners,
I hope that this message finds you in good health and high spirits. Having started our online assessments this week, for Arabic and Islamic, I am pleased to report that the overall feedback and observations are suggesting that our protocols and approaches appear to be effective and reliable.
Having provided opportunities for feedback from learners who have already completed the assessment, learners have responded positively, commenting that the procedures are rigorous to the point where they believe the integrity of the assessment can be maintained in these new conditions. They have also commented that there were no issues in their respective sessions. We are continuing to gain feedback from a wider sample of learners.
As with any new strategy, we are constantly looking at areas that can be improved, and we will be continuing a collaborative process, rooted in open communication with all stakeholders, to ensure that we develop our approach to online assessments and build upon our successes so far. I am sure that you will join us in our efforts to ensure that our assessments are conducted to the highest standards possible.
Please feel free to register any comments, feedback, observations or suggestions via the “End of Course Assessments: Frequently Asked Questions Form”, which has been shared previously. Additionally, I would ask that all parents or learners please complete the “ASCS 2019/2020: Online End of Course Assessments - Procedures and Guidelines Agreement”, prior to 3rd May 2020, to ensure that all learners are eligible to take their End of Course Assessments. I would like to thank those who have already completed these Google Forms, and we will be acting on, or responding to the various comments and questions that have been made so far, prior to the assessments in May 2020. Thank you all for your positive and proactive support.
Respectfully yours,
Mr. Harvey Furniss

Al Salam Community School has a great appetite to bring innovative hearts and minds together. Our recognition for innovation enables us to provide much needed thought leadership in the arena of technology and wellbeing. Solidifying our partnership with Bravely enables us to bring a tool, a secure and confidential communicator app, to support mental and emotional wellbeing, especially in this era of prolonged physical separation and isolation.
Building on our initial launch in November 2018, Al Salam was honoured to have been the first school in the UAE to launch the Bravely App for Anti-Bullying ahead of World Anti-Bullying Day in November 2018.
Now in April 2020, Al Salam Community School (ASCS) is proud and privileged to re-establish our partnership with Bravely. What was initially a pilot 18 months ago, has now been expanded to accommodate the whole of the Secondary School during these challenging times of extended Distance Learning.
The updated platform adds further security and encryption enhancement to provide a much needed safe, secure and most importantly a 100% confidential space for students and young persons to raise their concerns and a check on their mental and emotional health in times of increased strain in terms of mental health and wellbeing.
Students simply download the free “We Are Bravely” app from any app store, enter a code unique to Al Salam Community School and create an anonymous username and pin code.
They are now connected to their counselor.
Bravely does not request a students name, mobile number or captures any ip address’.
This ensures complete anonymity.
