Prepare
Have ready a print copy of the Meet the Artists: Using Science in Art book or plan to project the slide deck to read this text aloud.
Decide how you want to mark the magnets. It is suggested to mark them in advance. If the magnets are in a “roll”, mark the exposed end of the magnet with a piece of tape, dot, or whiteout pen. Peel off the magnet and set it aside. Repeat with the exposed end of the next magnet, and so on. Alternatively, you can tape 1 magnet to a tabletop. Mark the top side with tape or a whiteout pen. This is your test magnet. Bring each ring magnet near the test magnet. If it attracts, mark the opposite side of the new magnet. If it pushes apart, mark the side facing the test magnet. Tape or white dots should end up on the sides of the magnets that push apart (like sides).
Locate or print the Word Catcher cards noncontact force and magnet and be ready to post them during the lesson.
Assemble the Two Magnet Investigations materials. Practice with the magnets and decide how to present safety precautions to students so they will not pinch their fingers while using the two magnets.
To clean up materials after testing magnets, have students place the items back into the bins. Magnets will be used again.
Please read the general safety protocols for demonstrations and hands-on activities that use magnets found here: General Safety Guidance for Using Magnets.
