Prepare
Locate and bring back out the Our Examples charts from Lesson 1. You will replace the “Not sure yet” row with a new Category C: Balanced and moving with magnets and metals.
Print (in color, if possible) images of the Category C sculptures found in the Category C: Moving with Magnets and Metals reference. Images will be taped to the Our Examples chart as a reminder to students of sculptures that fit in the new category.
Be prepared to chart the following during the lesson:
Notice and Wonder chart
Initial Class Model (with pre-drawn picture)
Pre-draw the model scaffold from the Model to Explain Sculptures With Magnets and Metals handout in the science notebook (as shown in section 5 of the teacher manual) onto the initial class model chart paper.
Be prepared for students to add to the Driving Question Board and Ideas for Investigation.
If students need additional support for modeling, consider reading aloud the following text, Scientists Can Explain Using Models, to give students additional information about the practice of modeling.
